I realize this question is hard to answer as it would entirely depend on how busy the sites are. I am on a reseller box now and it seems to be quite busy at times, busy enough to affect page delivery. I am wondering if a level 3 VPS would give me better performance. I have done some reading on this and it seems that there is no definitive answer. The reseller boxes are high end but the level 3 VPS might give me more consistent performance.
If overall it takes a few milliseconds longer to deliver a page each time than it not being delivered for 5 or 10 seconds or longer on occasion than I think it might be better to go with the slower consistent server. My cpanel can take up to minute to load at times, this is apparently caused from a process that calculates MySQL disk space, it is set to run on a 24 hour refresh. While I understand why this happens my clients don't. I would really like to hear from some VPS account owners, specifically from level three holders. I am not sure if the server load is rated the same way but it would be interesting to know how the server load numbers relate to the number of sites. Cheers and thanks. |

I was on level III with 68 websites and it was working great. I then went to Lv4 only because of disk space.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Do you remember what the server loads were at with 68 sites, like on a Monday morning for instance?

Really low. Look at the attachment.
I'm running all ConfigServer options, Installatron and Munin service monitor. CPU runs around 0.10 to around 0.80 when multiple crons jobs run at certain hour. |

Ron,
I went from a reseller to level 3 VPS around 3 months ago and to me my sites feel faster and I never get the occasional 1 or 2 minute load times that I experienced every once in a while on the reseller server. I have 10 sites on my VPS and none of them get that much traffic so I can't really attest to performance under extreme conditions. One of the things that made a big difference for me was being able to fine tune my apache settings via easy apache and also the ability to enable mod_deflate. The only thing I regret was manually moving all my sites over. If I had to do it again, I would let support do it for me.

Hello,
Just wanted to pipe in. Not only does this depend on site traffic, but how the sites are configured. For example, a VPS could run hundreds of sites if they're serving static pages, and less for dynamic ones. So site and database optimization comes into play heavily. If you're worried about this and upgrading to a VPS plan, I might recommend moving some of your sites for a good testing 'burn-in' period. You probably won't have any issues, but this allows for some extra peace of mind. Have a wonderful day!
