Default How many IPs?

Hey guys, I've got 2 Shared accounts right now, but as I'm moving into some ecommerce stuff and looking at needing SSL certs, I'm wondering what the best option is.

My 2 current shared accounts are NOT set up to be the ecommerce domains (ie: the ecommerce sites are add-ons).

Should I add 2 new Shared accounts, or go the reseller route? With a reseller account, how many IP addresses does it come with? And can I add more to cover the above situation? I can't seem to find the answers anywhere (except the add IPs for $2/month).

Our co-op had a very similar situation and after doing all the math, I decided that the way to go for several e-commerce sites is the small unmanaged dedicated server, at $75 monthly.

It comes with five IPs, and you can install SSL certificates yourself, resulting in savings there.

You've got much, much more control, and can keep things much more secure. You also escape the hourly email limits of shared/shared reseller accounts.

Moreover, some payment gateways require a port no. (129? I can't remember the no.) that can be set up only on a dedi.

There are other many other advantages, too, but I mainly wanted to point out that it's cost-effective (particularly since I felt we'd eventually wind up with a dedi, so it seemed sensible to eliminate the intermediate stage, i.e., the reseller account that would be required to have multiple SSLs.)

But just to add to Gwenyth's statement, the reseller account doesn't come with any dedicated IPs. You need to buy any you need for the $2/month.

And you'd have to pay for HG support to install each SSL, instead of doing it yourself on a dedi.

It's on the order page when you go to checkout.

Remember, this is unmanaged. Support will fix hardware problems, but software problems are (mostly) yours to fix. Gwen has one and there are plenty others on this board that do, and lots of threads about how far support will go and what you would need to know as an owner.

Jeff, you may want to look through the Dedicated category to get some idea of what running one involves. IMO, it's nothing more than what a site administer should be aware of anyway, or be prepared to learn, and it is a fantastic education.

Anything that refers to DediKiddy(TM) ownership is about the $75 server.
