Post Mambo

Hello,
I would like to know if HostGator has Mambo in the list of scripts that can be installed right away or do I have to upload the script myself? If it does have then is it the newest one already?
And.. does it work fine on HostGator?

By the way, I tried the Live Support just now and it didn't work. No one was responding =/

Yes Fantastico has Mambo, and it's version 4.6.1.

Not to sound like a broken record from some other threads I've posted in, but you should really avoid the fantastico installation and do it yourself. It's not that difficult and is a generally safer, better way.

Some things should be a broken record, and Matt's advice is one of them. There are at least two other reasons besides security to heed it:
  • the educational value of doing it. It's not hard, and you will learn a lot about the package you are using; and
  • the confidence factor. Once you do it successfully, you will feel much more comfortable and more like you are in control of the package, instead of the other way arround.
Then, after you know it's no big deal, you will be able to choose packages not on whether Fantastico can install them but whether you like them--because you will be able to install non-Fantastico packages.

Matt mentioned the security aspect, so I thought I would toss in some others. But you've elaborated on the safety issues, which are probably the most important.

I don't use mambo anymore since Joomla seems to be the new home address. It takes like 30 seconds to install joomla manually. The thing I have found with fantastico is the naming scheme is a little screwy with the db, but you really don't see it that often. Also, I have read some reports of fatastico's default security being wrong.

If you are a CSS freak, look elsewhere. Otherwise, there are many threads on the forum about this. Just type it into the search box.
