Question Making SHTML Pages

How can I change the SHTML code that changes what the 404 error page looks like?

I want to make it display a link back to my homepage for example.

Just you edit this page (For ex 404.shtml) and you ad a link to ... whatever you want to go.
You can even insert a meta tag refresh linking automatically to ... after xx seconds.

You can use cpanel's errpr page editor which is under "Error pages." Just click on the error code (404 for ex.) to edit that error page.
