I spoke to support folks on AIM and through email, but it doesn't seem like the answers I'm getting are accurate, so I figured I'd post here so that I can hash my problem out. I'm on a semi-dedicated box and wanted to setup a mailing list (which is advertised as being supported). I went through the mailman interface that I reached through cPanel and set everything up. I'm a savvy Unix person, so I understand how these things work under the covers. I haven't used mailman, but I've run a few others (including things like majordomo). Once I get everything set up, though, when I try to send something to the mailing list, I get an error back that looks like this:
Quote:
http://www.ie.exim.org/exim-html-4.0...AQ_0.html#TOC3 http://www.ie.exim.org/exim-html-4.0...Q_0.html#TOC26 Since I don't have access to the real filesystem, I can't check on either of these to see what's what. The last response I got back from support said that I was trying to send email to a mailing list and that I couldn't do that. What exactly is a mailing list for, then, if I can't send email to it? One additional problem, when I go to edit the mailing list info (after clicking "Edit" from the screen with all the mailing lists), I get an error, because the href is pointing to the reseller name rather than my host name and that record doesn't exist in DNS. |

you got the idea of the mailing list all wrong. Tried explaining that when we chatted..
You seem to think you email the mailing list and then it emails everyone else. It is not that kind of mailing list. This mailing list you only email the people in the list nobody can email the list to have it email everyone. Its used to email a group of people with a click of a button. Your free to install any mailing list you wish, although I have no idea what that would be. I added that server to our dns so you won't be seing that error. Good luck on finding that type of email list you are looking for.

By the way, none of this is a complaint. I'm trying to understand how to operate in the environment you guys have set up. I'm used to running the box from soup to nuts, so I'd be going in and tweaking the alias file by hand or something like that. In a sendmail configuration, what would need to happen is to add an alias that maps the mailing list ID to the mailman wrapper. With exim and virtual domains, I'm not sure what is supposed to happen. I might dig around a bit more and see if I can figure it out. Quote:
