Default Magento

I have the latest version of Magento installed on two of my add-on domains. I have been working/playing with them over the past few weeks without problem.

Now, suddenly I can't access the front or backend of either installation getting a 403/404 error.

I can't pinpoint exactly when this started as I havn't tried for a few days. I had not just installed any new mods or anything like that. I have checked the CHMOD permissions and all seems to be as it should.

Any ideas please?

What server are you on? Have you filed a ticket with support?

You just got upgraded to Apache2. This could be an .htaccess problem or maybe mod_security. I'd suggest filing a ticket because there's not really enough detail here for us to help.

Well, I filed a ticket and it seems that it was the .htaccess file but there was no explanation offered as to what and why it happended (ie Apache2 upgrade) or how it was fixed. All they said was:

"The issue seems to be in your .htaccess file i backed the file up as .htaccess.bck and the site seems to work."

I did ask for more info but none was forthcoming. Do you know what must have happened? It would be nice to actually learn something from this.

spoke too soon - the backend for both installations are still generating a 404 error (with a REALLY awful hostgator 404 page!)

Have emailed them again to try and get it sorted properly and have asked again for the whys and hows.
