I signed up for HostGator under the recommendation of a friend a few months ago and have been happy with the service that has been provided for my shared hosting. i've also been helping said friend Admin his forum (vBulletin as well) that is under HostGator and for the most part have been happy with it. Now I am wanting to take the plunge of signing up for a Reseller package and moving the friends forums over along with my site and a few other peoples. Herein lies the question.
Under the current shared hosting that the above mentioned forums are on, whenever a link is posted during a live broadcast with say 300-2000 viewers (maybe 30-50 click throughs), the forums immediatly go to a 500 Internal Server error. I assume this is because the processes immediatly spike up and therefore lock it out until they drop (or something to that effect). But he also has a few other sites running (not that get hit that hard) under the same cPanel. So I am wondering this. If I move him under my HostGator reseller plan and divide his sites under their own individual cPanel, will it be any better? Or since it will still be shared hosting will we still have the same problems of receiving 500 errors when a group of people hit the site? I financially need to start smaller with the Reseller, but don't want to if it won't help any. I plan to eventually move up to Dedicated where I assume this would not be a problem. Any help/advice is appreciated. |

Good morning,
You have a good question here, and the answer is yes. If there are multiple sites that you are using at this time under one cpanel then you get 25 processes for just that cpanel. If you move to a reseller you will get 25 processes for each cpanel you setup. However moving all of your sites from addon domains to their own accounts can be difficult sometimes and will require some work on your end to get them properly setup. If you have any further questions feel free to let us know.

IMO a good solution would be to grab one of the $75 unmanaged dedis (were available yesterday, may still be).
Administering it will be somewhat more complicated than a reseller account, but it sounds as if you're going in that direction anyway. And your account flow will be WAY less complicated.

Thank you very much for the reply! I consider my self a fast learner so hopefully I can get them moved from addon to their own cPanel easily. If not, I have no shame in asking for help.

To purchase an unmanaged dedi, contact sales at HG. They come with WHM / Cpanel ready to go.

Good luck with the new server. There is a lot of information in the Dedicated section of the forum on managing it. I would recommend checking at configserver.com and consider their packages for security and MailScanner. At the very least I would download their Firewall and Mail Manage scripts and install them. It makes management much simpler.
