How Long?

How long does it take for the DNS to change over to your name servers? I plan on using Joomla or WordPress, but I assume that I need to wait for the change to occur first. I just recently (earlier this afternoon) signed up for hosting at HostGator and I'm anxious to get started! The site will be northatlantacuria.com. I know that I've read about it before somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find the info again LOL!

Propagation usually is pretty quick with new domains. I ran a whois on northatlantacuria.com and it is not showing as registered yet. Who did you register the domain with? Domain registration is a separate step and is not included with the hosting purchase.

You'd better buy your domain pretty quickly. The whois system is compromised and lots of domain squatters are registering domains that are looked up via whois. Happened to me last week. Fortunately, if the domain gets very little traffic in the first week, they will return it without registering it. Just puts another week slow down in the process! PITA!

HG charges $15 for a domain, while places like namecheap (where I bought mine) charge $9.29 and include a free year of whoisguard (prevents people from looking up who you are from your domain registration). But I'm sure HG offers similar services and more as part of their $15....

I registered the domain name through you guys (I thought) when I signed up. Interesting. I paid 15 bucks to somebody at least... So did I just buy the domain from Host Gator and need to register it with somebody else?

I'm sooo confused!

This forum is mainly for peer support. For specific answers you should contact tech support via a ticket or Live Chat. I would contact Live Chat and check on the status of the domain registration to be sure there was not a problem. It may take more time for the registration to show up. When I have registered with GoDaddy the domain propagated within a few hours.

Could you have just bought the first month of hosting (the largest shared plan is 14.95) without registering the domain? Have you gotten any email from HG?

I purchased Hatchling package (with domain) at 5 PM yesterday (now it's 2:42 AM) and domain is still "available" for registering in sites like name.com

Is it normal? (this is my first hosting purchase, so I don't know how it goes).

Yes, it can take some time. If you're very worried about it you can confirm the purchase with live chat.
