Default Re: Linux VPS Soft Launch

I've purchased a 384 MB account. I probably won't migrate my site over to it for a week or so though. I'd actually been considering leaving HostGator because of the lack of VPS hosting, but it looks like I'll be sticking around now

The pricing is VERY competitive! The key difference here is that it is (according to live support) a fully managed service, so we can have the VPS setup to our own specs. I tried using SliceHost about a year ago and gave up because I couldn't be bothered learning how to manage my own server. I just want someone to do it for me. I don't know of any other VPS service out there which can compete with these prices.

If anything you could charge a lot more than this. I'd happily have paid US$50/month for what I'm receiving for US$20/month. This is of course assuming that the service is as good as I've received for my reseller and shared hosting accounts in the past. Apart from a few major screwups and incompetent support people my experience with HostGator has been top notch so hopefully that continues with the VPS service

Thanks for offering this new service I was dreading having to find a new webhost and glad I (hopefully) won't need to now.

You won't get kicked off the service for over using resources and as long as you don't push the server too hard, it should be faster. VPS's also offer a more granulated upgrade path rather than having to jump all the way from shared hosting right through to a full dedicated server.

A vps is pretty much like having a dedicated server. VPS slice or node is completely isolated from the other node. If one node misbehaves or has a problem, it doesn't affect the other nodes. The performance is generally better than a shared environment as well. Due to the isolated nature, the root user of each vps node has full root privileges without restriction.

It is possible to scale a vps easily depending upon the base system. On a cloud system, a vps could even have more resources than any single dedicated server. They are a very efficient use of a server's resources.

I have been using a vps rather than a dedicated server for a couple of years. I have experience with both. I have had the equivalent of a Level 3 server here at HG with another provider. It has been a very capable server, at least as good as any of the inexpensive dedicated servers you can find. The hardware used for a vps environment is premium hardware, therefore more reliable than older minimal dedicated servers.

YMMV,

Jeff

Is Fantastico an option with the VPSs? I don't need it myself but customers would want it if I resell.

I missed it too as after receiving the news letter email I was too eager to sign up than read the forums!! Although there was a coupon code in the news letter to get 20% off which didnt work so I ended up paying full price anyway!

I hope it's worth it!!

If I get the VPS level 3 with Cpanel does everything that comes with the Aluminum reseller account included with the VPS and installed?

If I get eight IP addresses are they on the same C block or different?

Is there any SSL included or is that extra?

Will the account be PCI Compliant?

Sorry for all the questions but need to know before purchase.

Thanks,
Jim

Hmmm, so I've signed up. Paid my US$20 and have been an emailed a receipt by PayPal about that. There was a message saying to check my email about how to access my new VPS, but no message has arrived.

I'm not in any hurry, just mentioning it in case there is a gremlin in the system.

Yep - You have a set amount of system resources which no one else can use. This guarantees your site will be running smooth 24/7 and no one else on the server can slow it down.

Thumbs up Re: Linux VPS Soft Launch

Greetings Support Admins,

I'm currently using the business package you offer and these new VPS packages sound appealing. My questions would be

How many nodes (VPS Slices) are you going to be distributing with the VPS in comparison to the Shared Environment? I understand that the beta/soft launch is going to be for a few users but when these go public what type of ratio can we expect?

Are you going to offering upgrades on processors, ram, hd, bandwidth ala cart?

Best Regards,

I for one am very excited about this! I'm just waiting till you get the bugs worked out to sign up.

Here are the questions I'd want to have answered before I'd sign up though (coming from the perspective of a current reseller customer).

1) What is Virtuozzo -- is it web based and how does it compare to cPanel?
2) Exactly how does the migration work? If you just port it all over with no work involved, it's an easy up-sell to someone like me.

I'd really sell the "you don't have slow-downs based on some other person on your server hogging the CPU" aspect -- that is the single and only reason I'd be converting to this new features.

Kudos and best of luck on this!

Don't worry. Just took a while to arrive.

The administration panel appears to be relatively straightforward to use. Much simpler than my last experience with SliceHost.

Question Re: Linux VPS Soft Launch

I'm considering moving to VPS. I currently have a Business-level shared account with you. What "level" would be equivalent to what I have now?

Many thanks!

I'd not heard anything for an hour after ordering so I submitted a ticket. About 10 mins after that I got an email saying everything was setup ready to go. In the email it said if I requested cpanel/WHM..... I didn't see an option to request that on the order form so my guess is that they arn't included. It looks like Plesk is available to use though which I've never used so time for some learning!!

I'm getting the following error on trying to install Plesk:
Quote:
Plesk cannot be automatically installed on your Container.

Possible reasons
Internal error occured.
Possible solutions
Contact your provider for further information.
You can get and install Plesk from here.
The VPS is working at least though. You can see a crude page here ... http://174.120.174.151/

It's running something called "Parallels Infrastructure Manager".

Thanks. What does it come preinstalled with... PHP, mySQL, I assume? The sign up page says it's "capable." I really don't want to have to download, install, and configure a bunch of stuff.

Or, being managed, is it just a support request away?

there's a control panels link which installs a template, I'm still playing around but I think you need to install that first before u can install plesk.

the control panel is still installing for me now though and has been for around half hour so far!

** sorry go to applications, then manage, then choose cpanel to install. I believe its a template to allow the install of plesk, or any other control panel type.

Hi. I'd also like to know the answer for this, and if a VPS would allow us to configure the firewall to increase the maximum amount of connections per second from a single IP.

Thanks, in advance.

Where is that? All I can see is the "Control Panels" link underneath "Container Management" and in there all I see is the Plesk installer which spits out the error message above.

According to live support we can't install Plesk on these machines.

Might pay to remove it from the panel if that is the case then as it was quite confusing.

We don't have Fantastico for our VPS solution yet. But we will be looking into that as an addon next week.

Thanks for mentioning that.

Hi,
Is it possible to save me a spot for me, in Hostgator VPS because I will pay later. I don't want to spend too much money, and I host a big forum on a free server. The forum is on x10hosting. I will to upgrade later.

I have 2 questions regarding the VPS plans please:

1) The shared plans have the following restrictions:
a) Cannot use more than 25% of CPU/RAM for more than 90 sec
b) Limit of 500 outgoing mails/hour

I would like to know whether these limits are removed or still apply to the VPS plans.

2) How scaleable are the VPS plans. For example, if I start at Level 1, but subsequently want to upgrade to Level 2, etc, will my sites experience any downtime?
