After a month of extensive Linux Virtual Private Server BETA testing, we are finally ready to soft launch our brand new VPS service.
We will be releasing with 9 VPS plans. These plans will range from plans that cost just $19.95 for those just getting started with VPS to plans costing $219.95 for large scale web development and hosting. While LEVEL 1-3 plans will provide a significant amount of resources, our LEVEL 4-6 plans will give 20% more value on disk space and data transfer. Our LEVEL 7-9 plans will give a massive 70% increase on disk space, 20% increase on RAM, and a 20% increase on data transfer. As your needs grow, so will the resources available with each plan you move to. Our VPS servers have been designed with a weighted system to prevent the overselling of a single server and ensure maximum performance. At this time, we are only offering CentOS 5.x, however we will be providing other operating systems as unmanaged solutions in the near future. A base CentOS install will use roughly 40 to 60 MB of disk space. CentOS with our optional cPanel package ($10/monthly) will use roughly 2.5GB of disk space. 2 IP Addresses are offered free of charge with every package, additional IPs can be purchased at signup or later on for $1.00 per IP address. We are very excited about this long anticipated launch. To celebrate and thank you all for your support, we are offering everyone reading this post 50% off of their first month of VPS service. This coupon code will expire on Friday the October 30th, so sign up now and save! Just use the coupon, "THANKYOU" located in the box under your payment information to qualify. Again, we would like to thank all of you for your support and your patience as we've developed this service. Please feel free to report any problems, ask any questions, or make comments or suggestions about our new service in this thread. The VPS signup page is located at this URL http://www.hostgator.com/vps-hosting/. Thanks, HostGator.com Team

As for IP addresses, they do not transfer, so you will need to update the DNS information/records to point to the new VPS account once the data has been transferred. Hope this helps!

OK... this looks interesting to move my one reseller and one normal plan to this for my personal sites. Work is run on dedi's only.
So what are the features of these Level 3 VPS, since I require WHM/Cpanel, never heard of this VZ (to me VZ means Verizon) panel. I've found most just don't measure up to WHM/CPanel. Plus much easier to transition from WHM/CPanel to WHM/CPanel. What are the features of these accounts as compared to the Swamp hosting and Aluminum Reseller. Specifically: 1) PEAR and PEAR modules? Is PEAR installed, and what modules? Similar to the Swamp host? I don't want to spend hours reinstalling PEAR and modules and figuring out which modules if I port sites over. 2) PHP? Version? Settings v. Swamp/Aluminum 3) MySQL Version? 4) Perl, Python? 5) Move a Aluminum reseller and a swamp to these? Basically if this is VPS with all the features of a normal account like Swamp, and then throw in WHM for additional domains, etc... then this could be promising. That VPS page needs more info outlining the features of these VPS, why VPS is almost as good as a dedi etc... For 50% off for a month I am willing to move my sites over, as long as I am not going to spend an entire weekend fixing stuff. |

Your prices are competitive. They are pretty much the same as Linode, which is an excellent company. HostGator's cPanel availability is a plus. In addition, a VPS at HostGator is managed while a VPS at most other providers in this price range is self managed.

My site worked right off the bat when I accessed it via the IP address directly. Shell access also worked using putty on windows and ssh via linux through the IP address.
I won't be able to set up the nameservers at godaddy until this evening. Jeff |

Ticket #JHI-12639458 Probably going to cancel this, my other two personal accounts, and one work related account which I thought moving to VPS might be a good move. So HG you stand to loose 3 accounts, in pretty short order for letting this one slip through the cracks. A response to the ticket in a timely manner, of even simply... "Sorry for the issues and we are looking into..." and some updates to things... COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION. After lunch, and no change, you can kiss me goodbye!

Hi rec9140,
I apologize for the inconveniences and the frustrations. I can totally understand your frustrations in this matter. As with all new systems, and start ups, we expect a few bugs here and there, and unfortunately you were caught up in one. It seems your order was put in pending status, which caused it to not be created on the server. It seems once we found this out, your issue was escalated and taken care of, however there was just no response on it, saying we were working on it and verifying the account. Again, please accept my humblest apologies for this error. We've taken steps to ensure this won't happen again, and I'm very sorry that it happened to you. If you need anything else, please feel free to PM me, or "GatorCarl" on the forums, or you can reply to your ticket (which is now assigned to me), and I'll immediately reply to it.

We thought it would be a good idea to create a bugs and feature request area for VPS in our forums
If you have and bugs or feature requests, please post them there ( http://forums.hostgator.com/vps-bugs...ts-t58427.html ). |

Forgive me if this is a stupid question. Can someone tell me why I would want to upgrade from shared to vps (other than ability to install aps and better security)? Are there performance advantages? I know little about vps but wouldn't mind upgrading if I knew the benefits. Any explanations would be appreciated. Thanks

I've seen two people ask and no responses. Exactly what is the stock software package included? And, how does the performance compare to a shared server?
Do I end up having to download PHP, mySQL, the whole shebang? Am I managing all the software upgrades? |
