Hi all,
What is the difference between Windows and Linux servers, what one is better? I am currently using a windows pc. Also, when windows shared servers come out, will it be the same price, if so, will we have the choice to switch? Thanks. Sphinx

I don't think you can look at it as to which one is better. If you're using PHP then Linux would be your best choice (unless we're talking Windows Server 2008 then it doesn't make a difference). If you're using .Net then Windows is your best choice (Mono is impressive but not 100%).
No clue about the price but I don't see why you couldn't switch... I think the real question with switching is how easy will it be? If HostGator said "No, you can't switch!" then you could cancel your current account, sign-up under a Windows account and re-setup everything so no matter what you can "switch" but I think it's the ease of switching that is of concern. |

The OS you are using on your local computer really doesn't affect what type of hosting server you should consider. If you need specific Windows hosting features such as using .asp or .aspx then a Windows machine would likely be a better choice. If you plan to use regular html or php then Linux would work as well or better. Windows servers generally are a little more expensive but HG has not announced prices as far as I know.
