Default Knowledge Base Software

Hey, not sure if anyone here would know of anything but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I'm looking for a knowledge base system I can install on our local intranet. I want to be able to restrict access to certain categories in order to keep low level employees from reading docs regarding administrative duties.

Also, I'm looking for something free, or priced really low.

In this case, have you considered thinking of "knowledge base" as "generic blog with permissions"? You could make each entry a post and just tag/categorize them. Some blog software has user groups built in (I know my CMS of choice, Expression Engine does, but it's not free for commercial use. EE also has a built-in wiki with permissions you could use for it by the way).

Thanks for the ideas, I'll look into that. I actually hadn't even though of doing it this way. Might prove to be a better, simpler solution. Thanks for the idea!

If anyone thinks of anything else, I'm still all ears.

Also, it's probably worth searching sourceforge.net. Everything there is open source, and I'm sure there are tons of suitable apps there. You may need to figure out some other generic terms.

About the CMS, I think Joomla! is the best for that

With Joomla! you can create many types of sites, ranging from blogs, video streaming to online communities, so I think it should be relatively easy for you to make a few categories, and restrict them to certain user types.
