Hello,
We only recommend Level 1 and Level 2 VPS's for those that are very comfortable in a Linux command line environment. This might help: http://howtoforge.com/perfect-server...64-ispconfig-3

VPS is for those people whose sites might violate terms of service due to emails/hour, or simultaneous connections, or resource usage, etc, and who are knowledgable about Unix.
If you just want to run SMF, switch from VPS to Shared Server. |

if you don't know what you're doing on your unmanaged server, you should *really* move to level 3 with cpanel, so that you get a managed solution with a real controlpanel (whm/cpanel) and full support from HostGator.
Or go back to a shared server, if you don't need a VPS (like for running a standard SMF forum).... |

Hi Kashif2201,
First off- Kudos to leaving Godaddy- they suck big time You shouldn't have to install php, mysql or anything as long as you created your account with WHM/cPanel when you ordered it. I assume you are comfortable with those two? There is also your container software Virtuozzo that allows you to see the services, allows you to do backups (of the container) etc. You shouldn't need to change anything when your VPS is set up. I know the position you are in because it took me a few to figure out the structure until some told me - It is a server without the 'dedicated' name and that you have complete control except for a few things that Hostgator has to do for you, i.e. installing SSLs and dedicated IPs. If you don't know Linux command line stuff this is an excellent time to learn (I am doing the same) In the meanwhile install the Putty suite and Winscp. You can surf securely with winscp and use a few command lines in a gui environment. winscp uses putty to enter the commands. pete |

I suggest you upgrade to lvl 3. That is what I am at. It is inexpensive and is worth it. I don't know how hard it is to install cpanel when you upgrade but HG will do it for you. When I migrated from reseller to VPS it took less than 24 hours, but that is because I was using cpanel to begin with. Let me know how things turn out.

Hiya,
cPanel is only meant to be installed on a fresh OS. I cannot and would not recommend installing cPanel over an already-configured VPS. You would need to start fresh when upgrading to a VPS with cPanel installed.

I had a feeling that was the case. How difficult is it to migrate the existing sites if someone wanted to do that?
