Just bought VPS... some questions

This is my very first time using VPS and I am not a Linux user. I just bought VPS, the lowest package in the offer. I receive the welcome email and it says...

We are happy to inform you that your Virtual Private Server has been configured...

...

Your Domain: example.com
Your Username: username
Your Password: secret-characters
Your site's IP address: ###.###.###.##

I then browse the my site using http://###.###.###.## but I was greeted with a Apache test page.

I filed a ticket asking what to do next, and here their reply:

Hello,

You can access your server via ssh to ###.###.###.##. However, this account is not completely up yet. It's still pending verification on the sales side. You should get a second email once verification goes through. I apologize for the extra wait time.

And yet another reply from another HG staff:

Hello,

For the plan that you have chosen you will have to use an SSH client. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Using Putty, I tried to access ###.###.###.## supply my username and password then run the comman

ls

but it says (0). I don't know what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of questions but I don't know how to say it, please take this experience as a question.
