Default Joomla Installation w/o Fantastico

I have a HG shared site that has Joomla installed thru Fantastico. I see that Fantastico is not up to date on Cpanel. Now, I would like to learn how to self install Joomla as an add-on site. I have a users knowledge of Joomla, but am a complete newbie to the manual installation process of Joomla on the server.

I would appreciate a step-by-step walk through.

Thanks,

J.

Ok,

Step1: Get your username changed.. only HG Staff can have the gator prefix

Step2: Look here: http://www.joomlatribune.com/joomla/...oomla-cms.html

It's really pretty simple to do:

1. Download the full package from joomla.org (the .tar.gz version)
2. Upload that package to the directory you want joomla installed to.
3. Open up cpanel's filemanager and find that newly uploaded package and click on it, then click on extract.
4. Browse to the directory you extracted joomla to, yoursite.com/joomla (for example).
5. It will now guide you through the setup process.
6. You will have to chmod some files, but that's pretty straightforward and the install tells you which files to change chmod settings on.
7. You will also have to create a database and user for joomla to use (you can find out how to do that on google, but it's very simple to do).

Very nice step-by-step, Eric. But shouldn't the OP create the database before s/he does the install? Or is it OK to do it afterwards?

(In either case, you create the database through the mysqladmin in cPanel.)

6. Cmoding files:
You shouldn't cmod the files as all the HG servers are running phpsuexe now so there is no need to, they are writtable anyway, if any script asks you to change permissions to 777 just blatantly ignore it.

gwynath:
Yup you should always create the database and user before launching the installation wizard, with most scripts (including joomla) you can do it when you get to that stage however some scripts will populate the db as soon as you load the wizard page.

Gatorfootball:
To create the database and database user you can view hg's tutorial:
http://www.hostgator.com/tutorials/xskincpanel/cpanel_xskin_mysql.htm

and as Sam said get your forum username changed as it will confuse people. To do so you can email support@hostgator.com and ask them to do it for you.

Regards, Steve Xx

Thanks Steve,

I did try unsuccessfully to change my profile name in the user cp. No harm intended, I'm just a Florida Gator Football fan.
