Hi - I just signed up and installed Joomla through the control panel using Fantastico. When I logged into the admin panel it was not there and resolving to the domain name. I haven't moved the dns yet as I was hoping to work on the joomla site using IP and then when it was ready more the dns over. Is there anyway to get around this?

What error do you get when you view it via the IP?

when I put in the ip it goes to the above address. I get into the admin panel but the graphics are not there an the top level menu panel is not there. |

Sounds like something went wrong during the install, have you try'd installing it again?

I chatted with support and he said joomla doesn't install correctly unless you have the dns changed over. I can try your suggestion.

Installing it manually would solve this problem I believe. Or changing the paths to use the temp address until you are ready within the global settings.

Joomla does install correctly, but it does not work correctly using the temporary address. One workaround would be if you could park another domain over the primary domain and use it as a temporary address.

would the primary domain still be viewed?

joomla stores the URL in the DB, and configs, so if you install it via shared IP it may not function correctly until you re-install it when domain moves here, or ALter the instances or URL to one you would be using currently.

You could use the parked domain for testing. When everything is ok you change your primary domain's nameservers, change one line ($mosConfig_live_site) in Joomla's configuration.php and your Joomla site would work using the primary domain.
After that you could remove the parked domain.

Then can I just change the config file to the ip address?

No.
Because you are in a shared server (which means you are also sharing the IP address) you can not use the IP address.

This is a really good idea for future situations like this with a few CMSes. Thanks quietFinn!
