Default Joomla + Google Apps

I currently use the default php mail function to send my registration emails in joomla, from a gmail account. I was thinking of getting Google Apps for my domain (http://www.google.com/a/). To use their email service, I need to change the MX(mail exchange) settings in my cpanel for my hosting. Will changing the MX server affect my registration mails in joomla if I'm using php mail function?

No, the MX just points mail to the exchanger. Sendmail will still send mail.

I'm using this setup for one of my clients. So far so good. The only point you could have problems is not with sending mail to the world (internet) but if joomla wants to send an e-mail to an administrative e-mail on the localserver.

But do not point an SPF record to gmail ... or else your joomla mails could be regarded as spam. (http://forums.hostgator.com/showthread.php?t=8401)
