IRC Servers

Hello,
I am currently hosting a site with aplus, they have decided they no longer wish to have me as a customer because I run a small IRC Server to communicate with other members of my WoW team, I know I would need a decicated server. Does hostgator permit IRC Servers

from the TOS.-

...Examples of unacceptable material on all Shared and Reseller servers include:

IRC Bots, Proxy Scripts / Anonymizers, Pirated Software / Warez, image, filedump, mirror, or banner-ad services (similar to rapidshare, photobucket, or commercial banner ad rotation),.....

This means, as far as I do understand, that the IRC is permitted on the dedicated server.

Even on a Dedicated Server?

I thought a Dedi let you do anything you want (that's not actually illegal) as long as you stayed within your Bandwidth allocation.

I don't think so, as in the "Examples of unacceptable material on Dedicated servers include:"

Pirated Software / Warez, Escrow, High-Yield Interest Programs (HYIP) or related sites, Investment sites (FOREX, egold exchange), sale of any controlled substance without prior proof of appropriate permit(s), AutoSurf sites, Bank Debentures, Bank Debenture Trading Programs, Prime Banks Programs, lottery sites, hate sites, hacker focused sites/archives/programs, or sites promoting illegal activities, IP Scanners, Brute Force Programs, Mail Bombers and Spam Scripts. Forums and or websites that distribute or link to warez content are prohibited.

Does not talk to IRC in any way. I also do remember (not 100% sure tho) that one of the stuff did comment on a post here, telling that IRC on dedi is permuted.

Anyway, I guess it will be way better if you contact live chat or email sales at hostgator.com & ask them. Those are the only two places where you will get an up to date & official answer.

I asked and here is the answer:

No sorry this is prevented at our data center because of the increased risk of network/DOS attacks from running such services.

That was in Dec. 13. 2007.

we have a private irc server external of our dedi`s, anyone is welcome to use it.. eggdrops are permitted on there too providing they are friendly ones . Will quite happily advice how to assign irc.yourdomain if you want to use it with your domain name in for connection.
