I am seriously interested in using your services; but I am a newbie to the hosting end; not the programming side.
If I install Invision BB using the provided scripts is it free to use or do I have to buy a license from Invision? Thanks! |

The only BBS that is available in my cpanel fantastico is phpbbs. InvisionBBS is no longer available. I have used phpbbs both as a user and an administrator for a couple of years. It is free, easy to administer and use. I actually prefer it to the other bbs packages I have seen.

Has IPB 1.3 been removed from Fantastico?
I thought versions prior to 1.3.1final were ok to use? Another free bulletin board that folks are talking about, SMF. Seems to be highly popular lately. http://www.simplemachines.org/

The only BBS install script that is showing on the Cadillac Server cPanel/Fantastico is phpbbs, both the BBS icon and within Fantastico itself.
It may be different on other servers. From the original question it seemed that the potential client was looking for a simple point and click install. Jeff |

I've noticed that I have SMF in my Cpanel. So, is SMF the latest, greatest BB out there now? Has anyone used it?

Unregistered, it's been posted elsewhere: invisionboard have started charging for versions 2 and up (I think) which are the only ones that can be considered secure. There are vulnerabilities with the free version formerly included with Fantastico. If you see a host with that old version that tell you that they have no intention of updating it, I'd be worried. so it seems - pay, change forums, or run the risk of getting hacked with an old IV.

So, are there problems installing an IPB v2.0.3? I have a yearly license, and am considering moving hosting companies to move my domain here.
What would i need access to, to install the software on my domain? (I'm still a noob with setup of IPB.) |

I installed IPB v1.3 when I first signed up here and really liked it, but due to security concerns we paid to upgrade v2.0.3. It didn't cost that much and I've got to say that all my members and moderating team love it. There are a lot of really useful features that make it better than php if you have an active site.
Included in the licence fee (which gives you the upgrade) is the option to have them install the software and upgrade it a certain number of times per year. All you have to do is provide them with a few details about your account here, so it's pretty straightforward for the novice. When I was considering upgrading some people recommended V Bulletin, which are what is used here. The price is similar and I cannot comment on the service. For me it was just easier to upgrade than to consider transferring, but I'm very happy with what I do have. |

InvisionBB and and IkonBB are pretty much the work of the same people. Due to internal problems, everyone plit and went their seperate ways taking their coding with them. Conflicts over ownership of certain coding is causing all of the headaches. SMF is the end result of Yabb CGI, turned PHP and called Yabb2 and ended up as Simple Machines. Very simple to use and administer too. I would look for add-ons to come by the heaps very soon making this board the ultimate.
