My website on 70.85.249.2 is regularly but intermittently slow to load. I am trying to understand if the server status control panel can help me to identify the problem.
Can somebody help me understand data in the server status CP? Here is an example of my server status when it was loading slowly (see attachment). Thank you! |

Looks good. You should've ran a trace route to see if it was the network.

The webserver is likely the last place to look for slow loading pages, imo.
It is far more likely that something else is the cause, such as a network related issue. Slow loading pages that are server problems tend to be really slow, but happen only some of the time. In a short span of time a page loads fine, then suddenly loads really slow, then loads fine a minute later. If the slowness is constant, then I'd guess network problem. (provided nothing on the board in your example is red) |

I was trying to interpret the "server status" page in the cp as well. What does it mean if something is flashing red?

I was wondering the same thing. Gator30 had issues earlier. I couldn't get to it sporadically, it was slow. Tech support fixed it, but was so slow responding to my "What happened" that I had to get back to work (real job) and couldn't wait.
I looked at the server status but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. What do the various rows mean? Server Load or whatever of 1.15 (4cpus) ... Is that 1.15% of use? Anybody? |

"Knowing what the value of the server load is not very important though. Knowing how to interpret the value is what counts. Unfortunately, there's a lot of debate on how to actually interpret it, even among web hosting company owners. One thing is sure however: all of them consider a server load of 0.xx as safe. As long as most of the time the server load is under 1.00, you should not notice any problems like your website being slow. The uncertainties come when the server load has values over 1.00. Most web hosting company owners apply the following rule: if the server has a single CPU (central processing unit), a server load higher than 1.00 is not good; if the server has two CPUs, a server load over 2.00 is not good and so on." (http://www.cyberindian.com/web-hosti...article_id=153) So 1.15 with 4CPUs is good

What about the memory used? I've had that flashing red before. What causes this, and how can I try to prevent it?

If the memory is high you also want to keep an eye on the swap space because when memory gets too loaded the server will start swapping on disks which is slow and adds extra demand on the CPU.

Also, you have to remember, the CP is not realtime. There is a delay between what the CP service status says and what is actually going on.
As far as looking for slow loading pages, I think starting at the webserver is a good idea. If 10 of my clients websites are loading slow on a HG server, and I can get to msn, ebay, any of my other hosts, etc... without issue then I look at the CP. 99% of the time, there is a problem at the webserver. If nothing there, I then start checking the network from various locations. |
