Default Installing plugins not on PEAR

Evening all,
Been trying to install Smarty, and it doesn't really seem like this is possible using PEAR. So, I got SSH access, and SSH'd then proceeded to follow the guide on Smarty's website on how to install it. Hostgator didn't seem to like me trying to mkdir in usr/local/lib/php and even told me it was going to be reported, yikes...guess I missed that in the agreement, oh well. My question is how do I install this then? I have a feeling it's very obvious and will probably kick myself once I know how to do it.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, you can't do anything outside the /home/username directory, that's normal for anyone on anything other than a dedicated. You can install it where ever you want under your account, and just set it's location whereever you need it to be set. I only work with smarty as a component of Zikula, and it resides in the web root somewhere, don't recall where, and as I say, I've never worked with it directly.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

Will look into it, from reading the install guide, it seemed like it needed to have access to php lib, but guess not!

nope, just put it in, say /home/username/smarty/ and in your php require /home/username/smarty/whatever_the_include_file_is
