Hi,

I'm interested in signing up as a reseller and bringing along about a dozen clients. I noticed that Nuke PHP is offered, but I just don't want to use it given the current wacky situation with their GPL.

I'd really like to use another Open Source CMS such as Mambo, WebGUI, Scoop or even maybe PostNuke. Is this possible? Since so many of these CMS distribs come tarred or zipped, how can I install these without access to SSH? Is this something HostGator staff will do for me? If so, what's the cost?

The answer to this question will be one of my major decision factors in moving my hosting over to HostGator.

Thanks,
Paul

One more question...

Will I be able to install the above mentioned CMS systems for EACH of my resold accounts? I want my customers to have the option of installing these for their own sites.

Thanks.

i personally use a seperate one, (just didnt like nuke), its Land down under. Use FTP and put it in a file like LDU-603 in your public_html file. There should be no problem loading as long as you set the configure right and tables in database. LDU has a table maker so even a forever-noob like me can do it. The php-engine is http://ldu.neocrome.net/ and its all free with tons of support in forums and constant updates, new skins, etc. oh... the forum is built right in so there is no need for double joining, you know joining site then having to rejoin the seperate forum...

Actually not all Cpanel has the script for Fantastico. It depends which server you are located on. The more I read about what Fantastico has the more I wish the server I am on will have it installed.

Yes, it seems that Fantastico is not installed on the escape server (I am a reseller). Can we have it installed please?

Thanks!

I'd apreciate it on porsche too not to mention the fact that porsche does not have urchin stats.

Hello,

You are absolutely correct! I had assumed that x skin meant the one called "Xskin" I went into WHM after i read this and set the theme to x... now I can see urchin . I'll put that down to english not being my primary language

As long as I have your attention, how about OSCommerce? I seem to have Agora and another one (interchange?). With regard to Fantastico I'll wait patiently overall after a month I am very happy with hostgator and pissed off I stayed at my previous webhost for 3 years who in all honesty didn't give a S... for smalltime customers like myself.

Thanks!

You are probably on one of our older servers who doesn't have fantastico yet, thus the reason you don't have osCommerce or any of the other goodies. Be assured though that fantastico IS being added to all servers -- it's just going to take some time.

How to I change the main center page. I am ok with blocks and modules learning them, but I would like to eventually put a blog type area in place of the generic center page. Thank you Lance

Default Re: Installing other Content Management Systems (CMS)

Just reading up on some old stuff, and have a question relating to this original thread...

I was talking with my designer the other day, and they're now talking about using a CMS for one of my sites, I told him what I CMS type scripts I had on my cPanel that could be easily loaded, and he was looking at some of them.

He said that one of them may work, but he said that he may need to modify it in some way.

If he modifies one of the CMS, like PostNuke or something, is that something he would have to do after I install it on my server, or is it something he can modify on is own and we upload to the server somehow?

I don't want them to invest time into altering something that I won't be able to upload to my server, or have to change hosts to support their design/CMS environment...

Any ideas, or specific questions I should ask them if I've not been articulate enough to ask the right question?

Karsten

You are free to download the source files from the software developer directly (postNuke, phpBB, etc). This is actually the preferred method as it guarantees you are getting the latest version (sometimes cPanel is a little behind in their updates)

Whether you install your own files or choose to use the quick install in cPanel, you are free to modify them to your liking. Your designer would be fine to download the files from the developer site, modify them as needed, and then upload to your server.

I have found the better practice being to download the latest source code from the developers site as you are sure of obtaining the latest version, and not only that, but remain upto date with the code that seems to be updated quite frequently in most cases due to bug reports from users and also to keep abreast with security updates to ensure that your code is safe.

Thank you both for the feedback, I just wanted to confirm I was thinking about this correctly, and wanted to avoid any issues w/ designer's time etc...

Thanks,

Karsten
