I am having a "small" problem. lol I am trying to setup my first website through hostgator and at first I just loaded a test page and if you typed in my main www.allingtoninn.com it would show the index and list the test page then I got a "grand" idea of naming the first page index and now as you can see when you go to my home page no page shows up. Any ideas or links to somewhere I can get help. Also i can not seem to get my Dreamweaver and cpanel to love each other. Read through many of the posts on here and still something must be wrong.

First make sure you upload your files in public_html folder so they can be seen on the web. The first page should be name index.html
For Dreamweaver, it really does not connect with cPanel. It will connect with the FTP on the server thru port 21. If you need help to connect to the server with dreamweaver, just PM me and I will help you the process of connecting to our server so you can upload your files in the public_html folder. |

I believe you'd need to put your index.html in the "public_html" folder of your ftp. That's where my index.html file goes. You can get there by either an Ftp program or CPanel. Hope this helps.

Well instead of only showing to one person about Dreamweaver, I will post it here. My tutorial is about Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004
How to connect to your server to upload you files in the public_html folder: Step One, - Open Dreamweaver, Click 'Site' on top of the page; - Choose 'Manage Site'; - A small screen will open up with title 'Manage Sites'; - Click the 'New...' button on top right of the 'Manage Sites' screen; - Choose 'Site' and not FTP & RDS Server; - A screen will open and there will be two tabs on top; - Choose the 'Advanced' tab; - Select 'Local Info' in the left box under 'Category'; - On the right side of that screen under site name, give it a name you would like. Exemple: My site at Hostgator. - In 'Local root folder' click the yellow folder and go search for the folder you have created with all your files that you will need for your website, - In 'Default Images folder' you can leave it blank or if you have an images folder for your website, choose it but it can stay blank.(If blank, you will receive a warning message but just don't do anything about it, just press cancel), - In 'HTTP address:' you can write your domain name in it like, my_domain.com Step Two: - Click the 'Remote Info' in the left box under Category. - Click the drop down menu next to 'Access' and choose 'FTP', - There should be a lot more option that will appear after you have choose 'FTP', - In 'FTP hosts:' write 'your_domain.com' or the IP of the server your are on, - in 'Hostdirectory:', write this: /public_html/ - in 'Login' box, write your login that Hostgator provide you for your cPanel, - in 'Password', well write your password to connect to your cPanel, - check the box 'Use passive FTP', - Click 'OK' at the bottom of that screen and it should close. Step three: - Close the Manage Sites box you have, - If you don't have on the main window of dreamweaver a big white screen with a black arrow and text that is 'Files', Press F8 so it will appears. - You will see in the Panel 'Files', on the far left, two plug that is not connected with a circle under it. Press it and it will try to connect to the server. To see if you are connecte, you need to see the circle in green. - After you have connected, Select you files you need to put on the server and press the Blue Arrow that is pointing up. That will upload your files on the server. Well I think I have tell enough for the moment. Happy Dreamweaver! Best Regards,

Thanks so much I believe I am all linked up. Still hasn't solved my other problem of it not actually showing but at least it is linked!
Another question is what format should my index be saved in html or php? Maybe that is my problem! And thanks again you are awesome for doing all of that for us newbies! |

I hope you did not delete the public_html folder on the server or rename it. You have to put the index.html files IN the public_html folder. If you have delete it, Just create the folder again.
Try that.

Do you have at least a file in the public_html folder at this time on the server?
If yes, what is the name of it with the extensions.(like test.html or anything else) Just put anything in it at least to test it and PM me the name of the files you have in the public_html. |

Take a look at her URL....www.allingtoninn.com
If you use the literal http://www.allingtoninn.com/index.html You end up with a 404 message The requested URL /testpage1.html was not found on this server. It seems to me that index.html is there, but has a redirect to testpage1.html. The 404 page isn't doing it, so it has to be in index.html. Also, I can't actually see index.html and when I try to read it using curl, I get a blank page, so maybe it is a .htaccess issue. RopinCowgirl, delete the file .htaccess from /public_html and see if that helps. |
