Describe the image hosting you wish to have. It is fine to have photo galary etc online.

Hi,
What we mean when we say "image hosting sites" is we don't allow sites like flickr, hidebehind, imageshack, etc on our shared machines for obvious reasons; $9/month doesn't come anywhere close to covering the cost of the "mini-ddos" that image hosting sites generally create). Those types of sites should be able to turn a profit on a dedicated server without affecting others, and they're truly meant to be on dedicated service anyway. If we had unlimited apache connections available, maybe it would be an option, but image hosting sites quickly consume all available connections. Same with RapidShare clones or tools. A personal image gallery or something is fine -- GTGeorge is correct. Last edited by GatorJamyn; 01-23-2008 at 12:55 PM. |

May I ask, why do image sites are a resourcing hogging thing?, I would think, hosting a small 500kb or smaller image, shouldn't really be such a problem, unless you get 10k people looking at it or something?

Because they get linked in webpages etc, which will end up using bandwidth and CPU

You'd be surprised how much images can kill your bandwidth. On one of my personal sites I designed a couple of flyers to post online and my bandwidth dramatically increased by a few gigs from only 6 images (roughly 150k each) getting posted all over myspace and various online forums. So think of that scale and multiply it by hundreds of new images being uploaded a day.

Wesley ... what about hotlink protection?. The situation that you describe is perfect for it.
And by the way, and only for curiosity, where can i find in the Terms Of Service the apache connections limit clause?. One more thing, a couple of days ago i used this webpage (xferides.net is my domain on HostGator): http://www.domaintools.com/reverse-i...e=xferides.net I suppose that several shared servers can share the same static IP, right? ... because i'd be worried about sharing the same server with another 939 domains/sites .

No, servers can't share an IP.

Then i don't know if i should congratulate hostgator for managing near 1000 domains/sites on a single server without burning the whole machine or find another host with less overselling.
... Nah, appart from a few high cpu problems on my server, Hostgator seems a rock solid host; i'll keep my site with them .

I've mentioned this in a few threads-- the number of domains has *absolutely nothing* to do with the load on the server. One person with a single HTML page can park 500 domains on that single HTML page if they'd like, and there would still be a tiny, tiny load. However, a person with a highly dynamic and database intensive website running on a single domain can kill the entire server.

Makes sense, if a user looks at that page once then re-visits it, does it use up more bandwidth or will his computer cache the images, thus saving the need of downloading it all, if the user settings allow that, I think I just answered my own question.

By the way, that figure listed on the link that you provided is not accurate at all. You are on gator145 and there is about 1/3rd of that many clients on there.
