.htacess throwing 500 Error

Im working a client website for 10 hours Ive messed with the .htaccess file and mod_rewrite.

Even when I try to do, this is my whole .htaccess file

Rewrite Engine on
RewriteRule ^page.htm$ new_page.htm [R,NC,L]

Something that simple is still throwing a 500 error. For the first 100 times I tried it, I couldnt get it to respond at all. Now, at least I get an error. Whats up with this?

I messed up the copy and paste.. I do have it as RewriteEngine on

Ok i just check renamed my files from .htm to .html and it seems to be working now ? I spent 10+ hours working on this.. can someone explain why .htm wouldnt work?
