Hi,
I am in over my head with moving this one client's hosting to my reseller package. Some hosting terms I barely understand and others I am clueless about. I'm hoping I can clearly explain my problem and someone can help me. My client has a domain registration, hosting and e-mail set up with one company. The hosting is then redirected to another company with the A record listed with the different IP address - which I have. (My client sells products from the company the redirect goes to.) My client wants to move the hosting and the e-mail addresses to me. I was told I would need to change(?) the MX record to do the e-mail addresses. I have added the domain name to my reseller account, (but have not changed the name servers yet with the registration company). I can see the A record and MX record in the WHM panel, but I'm afraid to touch anything and mess up my client's existing site. This is all temporary as we are doing a redesign of her site and will be completely leaving the product company (they just have templates for people to use). Is someone out there willing and able to walk me through this. I would greatly appreciate it! Hopefully I explained it well enough. Like I said I feel in over my head with this one! Thanks in advance. |

If you just change the nameservers to be set to HG, instead of wherever it it set now, and let the A and MX record come from the nameservers, you'll have everything pointing to Hostgator.

Thank you for your reply. The products company says that the A record MUST be redirected. So, unless I am misunderstanding (very likely), I can't just change the name servers to HG. Just changing the name servers is what I've done for other sites, but this one is strange. When I went to the old hosting the only files there were the coming soon generic ones. The site is actually hosted at the products company with a redirect from the hosting company of record.

Your DNS information is either going to be hosted at the registrar, or at HG. The nameservers define which server gets to be the "authoratative" DNS information. If your DNS is set to your registrar, then you'll use their custom tools to set the A record. If it's set to HG, you'll use WHM.
Either way, you can always just find out the IP of your box, and set the A record and MX record to that and leave things at the registrar if this becomes a huge problem.

Hello. Thank you for your patience with me. So, I could go ahead and change the name servers to HG, then put the IP address in the A record and the MX record and I'd be all set? That would handle the redirect and the e-mail?
Hopefully I am understanding correctly. Again, thank you for your patience. I appreciate you taking the time to help me. |

Yes, that'd be fine.

Thank you for your help.
I went in and changed the A record, but the MX record didn't look like it wanted me to put the server address in there so I did not change that. Hmm. I'm very confused about this! I'm not even sure why I would need to touch anything to do with the e-mail. I set up the e-mail accounts and clicked the box for it to use the local servers or however that was worded. Perhaps that was wrong. |

If you PM me your domain name, I can give you more specific advice and look up your DNS as it is now.
