Can I ask if this uses much PC System Resources? I am considering joining in but I would need to know about the System Resources uses first. Thanks.

it does in fact use alot of system resources but only AND only when your computer is idle, meaning that when it is doing nothing else. I have never had any performance issues with it running.

I have been running this for months and and found that except for rare occasions when I had to exit and restart the FH program, it only uses system resources when the system would otherwise be idle. I keep it on continually with no interferance with my day-to-day and I work with my PCs all day every day.

You all know that F@H makes your computer/servers use more power and thus more electricity costing you money?

Guess it's not a very "Green" project. Oh well. It is a contribution in our own way. If it costs me a little bit of juice to help out, I am all for it.

Umm... yep, this project almost emptied my wallet.

Considering my computer runs all the time anyway, might as well make some use of the cpu cycles.

I must get the monkey downstairs back on the bike / generator. But that would cost me more in peanuts.

So in addition to making a contribution to F@H, you ae trying to ensure the long term health of your (beloved) wife by making sure she gets enough exercise.

Personally I would go for eating lots of beans and a gas turbine.

Completely aware and I believe that while it does increase the power draw by quite a bit, if at some point at the end of the day the power we use to simulate the protein folding sequences ends up saving a life, curing a disease, or anything positive comes out of it then we've done something good for the world (even if we did have to use some energy to do it).

After all, what device in this modern age doesn't cost any of the following :

Electricity
Gasoline
Money

Ohhhh well I guess you could say that the coffee table or a bottle opener(manual ones anyway) doesn't use electricity or gasoline, but they do cost money, and didn't it cost electricity or gasoline to make the item in the first place, transport it to where it was sold, etc? Just my thoughts folks, just my thoughts.

Not to mention the landfills that stuff ends up in. Given the hazardous waste generated by disposing of electronics, keeping older computers useful for longer may cancel out the electricity used to run them for f @ h.

Particularly if a little thought is applied to minimizing older (non-LTD) monitor use, the real energy hog, while they run.

With the latest and most modern processors the power consumption is indeed increased substantially as better ability to save power when the processor is otherwise idling has gained ground. However, for most processors still out there (at least those in servers and not laptops) this is still not that big of a saving.

Thus if your computer is gonna be turned on anyway (and it's not a laptop) it's probably not gonna make that much of a difference. It WILL use more power - but not that much more. If it is a laptop or other specially designed power-saving CPU then it will become a good deal more expensive.

And of course leaving the computer on just to run F@H is a bad idea for the enviroment. But if it's gonna be on anyway? The benefits greatly outweigh the costs.

My own contributions tanked after my 24/7 server went belly up, but now that I got a new I should be picking up some steam again

Yeppers and since my kid can't stop playing games on his PS3, I had to get one of my own to run F@H... lol... it's not just for that... but it does run a lot.

Its never really bad though, even if you are consuming lots of power. Electrical bills from computer use are fairly cheap.
