I guess it makes sense then - it's NVidia's new flagship team promoting their new powerful cards with their new GPU client.

The NVIDIA GPU folding client for any 8000 series and up graphics cards is now available! It is supposed to produce MAD POINTS compared to CPUs, ATI GPUS and PS3 if you have a decent card.

I have a box with a 512mb NVIDIA 8800GT video card and one with a Geforce 8500 256MB that should help us move up the rankings faster.

So anyone that has an NVIDA 8xxx or 9xxx, GO DOWNLOAD IT! (link below) I had downloaded a 'leaked' alpha version of the client but it was pretty buggy, though I have not yet tried the new beta:

http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...tray-612b6.msi

Windows only for now :-(

So yeah keep looking out for it! Team Hostgator FTW

You have to make sure you have the official nvidia drivers version 174.55 here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html

or the folding client will not work properly

Yeah, the nVidia client is insanely fast. From Kazper's link, above:

Quote:
The new GeForce cards are expected to hit more than 650 nanoseconds of protein simulation in a single day, while the Radeon HD 3870 is stuck at about 170 ns. The Playstation 3 is able to produce "only" 100 ns of simulation, while a quad-core CPU creates an output of just four nanoseconds. For those who are keeping count: The GeForce GPU will be about 163 times faster than a quad-core processor in this specific application.
I want.

LOL I think you and Kazper are really up there in the running for that grand prize. I'll have to review everyone's ranking and rate of advancement but it's my off day. I think I'm going to make some music and play around a bit on the PS3.

I was poking around the [H]orde's website and Liquid Ninjas - basically trying to see what they were running to be posting the sick ppd they seem to be putting up - and now I've been bitten by the overclocking bug. My AMD 5000+ Black edition arrives tomorrow with memory and a new mobo. My GF is still shaking her head at me over all the comments I've previously made about overclocking (specifically about how silly I thought it was).

Somehow I don't see myself putting together a dedicated folding farm though. For starters my house is hot enough and it's summer in Texas for cryin' out loud. Second of all I just can't bring myself to have that kind of cpu power sitting around that I can't use for something else on a whim. Third of all - who in the world has that sort of cash laying around that they can purchase 24 mobos/cpus/etc just to fold with?? Eeek!

I'm sure if they donate some of that money they paid for those items to Stanford or whatever it will be a tax write off depending on what business they are in and so forth.

Either way, 1 cpu helps, anything helps, strength in numbers. And trust me, it's not *cold* down here in Houston. I used to live in DFW for 18 years so, I know exactly how it can get up there.

I have to say I'm pretty sure Sheptech has that prize nailed, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to do my best to make it a race. But I don't have a company with customers I can convince to donate their CPU cycles I've enlisted the family now as well, but those are all single-core machines, and that doesn't really pack the same punch I could stop playing on my PS3 during the day of course, which would likely increase my output by up to 50%, but somehow I don't think I'm willing to make that sacrifice

Now if only I could grab some of those Nvidia boards - but all my computers are old-fashioned AGP graphics, so that'd have to be a completely new computer

Understandable, I just got the new PS3 firmware and some awesome demo games :

Be sure to grab 2.36 as Sony claims that it :

"New for 2.36: System stability during use of some PlayStation® format software has been improved."

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate

Oh, not to mention we just passed up the Digg folding team as well as the Youtube folding team.

Yup, I had to update my firmware too last night. I've been pondering getting a 2nd PS3 just for folding lol. It's a semi cheap solution than building another pc.

Perhaps...but I fold 5 million step units in 1 hour now on my Core2Duo with the XFX Nvidia 8800GT 512MB while the PS3 takes around 5 times as long. Either way it's still helping and it's a sweet piece of hardware.

To be fair it's more of my girlfriend being unwilling to give up playing Pixeljunk Monsters - with or without me But end result is the same. 'gratz to sheptech by the way. Went to bed ahead and woke up with him having blasted ahead

I so look forward to firmware 2.40, since it's been confirmed to have in-game XMB

I'm just here to help the team

Got my new black edition Athlon 64 X2 5000+ up & running and it's still chewing on its first work unit. I think I went with the wrong mobo for it though, it seems slower than some of the Intel duos and the utility I need to feed more voltage to the chip only runs in windoze and I'm running Ubuntu 64. Ugh. Doubt the util will run under Wine but haven't tried it yet. I see me trying to create an XP boot cd in my near future.

I don't think it's a windows vs. linux thing -- i have an AMD 6000+ running on a windows box and an intel core2 e6750 in gentoo amd64 and the linux machine with the supposedly slower core2 is outperforming the faster amd64... i think the fah client code is just more optimized for intel instructions or something ... BTW, early congrats on bypassing me tomorrow and on us both getting past the 80,000 point mark!

I've been folding since a guy I gamed with, Jim (OC-AMD), got me into it about 4 years ago. Lots of good times!! The box I'm posting this with, an old AMD 1700+ running at 1.4 has been folding 24/7 for over 3 years, it's slow, but damn.. it just wont die. lol

On the big WU's more memory does help. For a monitor you might want to try FahMon it works in linux, winders and OS X. For stats nothing beats Extreme Overclocking

Oh yeah, when you get your electric bill, try not to pass out....lol

I don't think that memory helps all that much - my AMD 5000+ has 2G available while two of my Intel Duos only have 1G each and they're both outperforming the AMD. I recall reading several items about how the FAH code prefers Intel. To make things worse, the requirement for a 32-bit library under Ubuntu64 means the Linux FAH code has a lowest common denominator focus and can't take advantage of all the hardware I've thrown at it on my new system.

I was curious to know what HG was using to monitor - whether it'd be something freely available or something homebrew. I've been using FahMon combined with some creative scripting around MoveItFreely (FTP client for Win) and the Linux FTP client to pull all my stats into one place. I also like FahMon's ability to spit out html (see www.shepherdhost.com/fah).

I personally love FAHspy, but it's Windows only (although apparently it can run under WINE, and can access Samba shares as well). It's miles better than FahMon for keeping track of a large installbase of FAH clients IMO.
