Default Hostgater, and the digg effect?

I'm been running a small gaming website for a few years now on a different host, last week I was featured on Digg and now my host wants me to leave.

So i'm curious, if I was hosted on Hostgater and some how go featured on Digg again, is it Hostgaters practice to boot websites that have a surge in traffic for a few days? Or do they allow for it?

Best Regards
Dogull.

If its a dedicated server, its upto your config to what extent it can handle the traffic.

If its shared plan, you have CPU/process Limits, and as long as you stay within it, it should be find.

You can email sales with the amount of traffic in question and get a official answers for this.

Check our ToS on this:

http://www.hostgator.com/tos.shtml
7a.) Resource Usage
User may not:
a) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.

Unfortunately the "digg effect" can cause this if it hits the front page.

That really sucks that they asked you to leave instead of trying to help you cope with your new popularity.

Basically, if you get hit hard enough that you slow the server down, HG will suspend your account until you can sort it out to keep from bringing down the other accounts on the server. And if it becomes an ongoing issue, they'll want you to move to a dedicated server.

However, depending on what it contains, a "gaming website" may not be allowed on HG shared accounts.

To the point, if you get 'Dugg' here, you get shut down and a nice page is shown to everyone that your account has been disabled.

Is there a list in "layman's terms" with suggestions as to what type of sites/content could get your site suspended? There's the obvious...gaming, adult, warez, etc... But something more specific would be a big plus.

I'm going to upgrade to a reseller plan within the next week and this is my biggest fear.

Yes, right here http://www.hostgator.com/tos.shtml

If you have to give it a second thought, then you should get a dedicated. If what you're planning on doing is questionable to yourself, then it probably is and getting suspended is something you should worry about.

I'm glad to hear that. I'd hate to be at a host who would let the other 400 customers on a box suffer because one customer got hit by digg.

I was referring to sites that sign up for web hosting and not the site offering web hosting... Are their really hosts that offer illegal content hosting? It would be news to me.

I know about the TOS but because I didn't plan to do anything illegal, immoral or otherwise I only skimmed over it. Looks like I should maybe print it out. ...thanks mack
