Well maybe we can have a happy ending afterall.
Thanks to another thread on this forum ( http://forum.hostgator.com/viewtopic.php?t=601 ), I have been able to successfully import my gigantic database. http://www.ozerov.de/bigdump That is a custom php script that allows for staggered imports of large databases/tables. Using this script, you can get around the 52MB limit of phpMyAdmin, and you don't have to worry about session timeouts. gator_support, I apologize for my attitude, but I stand by my assertion that this situation was handled very unprofessionally by your staff. I will also accept some blame for acting like a tool. I would suggest that you grab that script asap and see to it that your techs know how to use it so that if you ever are asked to dump a huge database, you will be able to help out. |

I think what NewGuy experience should be a lesson for the support team.
You know, in support, or "customer relations", NEVER leave your customer in "limbo" I know it is also possible that as a techie you tend to "sink" into a problem so long that you forgot to communicate with the customers. We also understand that the support team is trying their best to help us, the customers. We really appreciate that and I believe NewGuy appreciates that too. But what piss him off is the feeling of "left in limbo". Let him know the problem, the issue, and in the end when the solution comes (as given by NewGuy), everyone's happy because everyone learns a new thing. Support team, I think you really need to think about uping your communication. Just don't leave us in "limbo". BTW, it is possible to transfer huge database without incurring load. I've done that few years ago via script. My team calls it "Create-SQL-Statements-On-The-Fly-While-Flushing-Output" script. It takes me 2 hours to create the script and the transferring of 1GB database took only 1 hour. Hey, 1GB database in 1 hour is not bad right?

Just a little sense of my own. I have been a reseller for 4 different major hosting companies over the last 3 years. I have started up hosting websites to resell hosting, trying to build relationships with my own clients, and then I have been let down by tech support that isn't able to keep servers up. 5% of hosting companies have the real 99.9% uptime. Host Gator is one of them!
I will only expain 1 company in this post to show why to stick with Host Gator. 123-web-host-reseller.com ( Sucks!) If you've used them you will know what I'm talking about. The worst hosting providers online period. Within 8 months time, on a reseller hosting package. The server I was on went down at least 10 times. I'm talking it was down each time for 3 to 10 days at a time! I wanted to track down there techs individually to knock out each of them! They made me furious... All of them working there are cocky *******s. Within the whole year of doing hosting the downtime basically wiped out all my profits due to lost customers because the server was down so often. They wouldn't restore any databases that had been wiped. I had to continually re upload, re install, etc. Horde was down at least 1 day a week. I could go on about problems for a few days. Be glad your with a reliable host. You could really go try to look somewhere else, but guaranteed you will regret it! Host Gator is much more reliable, friendly, responsible & capable of maintaining a client list of thousands of websites than any other website hosting company I've seen to date. Not to mention the cheap prices! Thanks so much for keeping your servers online 24/7 you are allowing my small company to finally grow & gain profits without having to worry about downtime & losses which I have no control over! - KP Media Hosting |

this tale might be good for anyone moving DBs: I just moved one yesterday from one server to another (neither hostgator, oddly). the initial size of the DB was way too big to go up via phpadmin, but guess what? you can use phpadmin to break the db down into tables, and also tables into batches of records all to be reuploaded. it took about 10 different cut ups to the database to get it all down, over, and up again, but it worked just fine, with zero drama.
Every host is different. i always try to find a way using whatever tools they have to do the job without calling anyone for help. Maybe this is just my own mentality - that when you sign up for a host you need to know how to use their tools they have even if they're not perfect, and not tax the support people. But that's probably just me... Thanks for the link to bigdump though. Wish I had that before I did the above more manual method. Next time I have to move a DB, I'll give it a shot. |

Locking this thread it's turning into a support thread. Someone open a topic about big databases to move in the support forum, very useful!
