You'd better change it, the admins are angry here...

Change what?!
What the heck are you talking about? |

The signature is a bit over the top (but then again, so is yours!
).But the remark about the admins is a mystery. This is a very under-moderated forum. In any other forum, most of satnav's pointless "me too" posts would have been deleted. |

I think he is talking about the signature (that the poster said he was testing.) It is a bit hard to make sense out of most of the posts, however. With over 100 posts now I think maybe two of them were more than a couple of lines.

Sometimes, brevity is the soul of wit. In this case, it seems to be the soul of witless.

Hiya satnav....
With the greatest of respect (As a newbie I do not want to cause any friction) I believe that you are being a little oversensitive to my signature, and do not really take kindly to your slightly threatening suggestion. I use the same one on about TEN different forums (Including my own), I apologise if it offends you, but it's only a little fun and does not include any seriously choice expletives. If the Administrators found it offensive I would consider editing it, until that happens......it stays!!! Sorry!!! ![]() I also think you are being a little forward for somebody who's only personally created ONE out of 115 posts, and only been a member themselves for two minutes!!! Chill out........ Oh BTW, how do YOU know the Admins are angry????? ![]() .

When the signature is multi-colored, contains multiple graphics (including one animated one), and is bigger than the post itself, I start to wonder about the poster's reasons for posting in the first place. I begin to suspect that the person is posting just to get back links (that's why a lot of forums don't even let you have a signature until you've got, say, 20 useful posts under your belt).
"Clever" sayings usually backfire, too. They're clever the first couple of times you read them, but after the 20th repetition, they don't seem so clever any more. So, I don't use a signature at all, since I don't think it would add any information, and just distracts attention from the post. Anyone who wants to visit my site can check my public profile, where there's a link. |

No reason to be despondent!
![]() When I join a forum, I usually spend some time poking around to get the "feel" of the place before I start any threads. This forum, for example, isn't really much of a chatty, social place. It's a forum with a purpose - people post tech questions, and others try to answer them. The regulars occasionally engage in some off-topic banter, but usually not (in here, I think that usually happens via PMs, instead of forum posts). For example, before starting a "Hi there, I'm new to the forums!" thread, I look around, and see if others routinely do the same thing. If introductions aren't the norm, I don't bother. If I don't see any "test" threads, I don't start one - I just wait until I have an actual reason to post (question or answer), then see whether things like my avatar are working. There's also a real hostility in here towards anything that even remotely smells like spam, partly because the moderators in here are very slow to take out the garbage. Other forums have a very different character to them, so I approach them differently. If you think this place is negative, you should see some of the forums I've stumbled into. Any failure to observe strict posting protocol is met with verbal abuse, post deletion, and banning. There's not much moderation in these forums, but others are presided over by true Forum Nazis™, complete with the uniforms and torches. And I know of one tech help forum in which one of the most knowledgable and helpful posters suffers from severe insecurity, so he starts each of his responses with a few paragraphs that tell you how awful your website is, how stupid you are, and how much nobler and more virtuous he is. When he gets down to business, the advice is excellent, but the preliminaries would make for a good case study in a psych textbook. It makes that forum a horrible place.

Very interesting, thanks for your feedback EarlyOut....
![]() I can assure you my intentions were 100% genuine and with no ulterior motive, albeit maybe naive, and the introduction was just me being friendly as a new arrival. I'll keep the forum as a desktop shortcut, by restrict any mailings to that of a business nature and keep away from the social aspect. I've even decided to change my Avatar to something more apt and accepteable to the masses, and remove my site link from my signature, the majority of people that I've already experienced on this forum (present company accepted!!) are not the type that I would attract to my forum, sorry. ![]() As to satnav who started all this nonsense... (Why couldn't you have just said "Hello, nice to meet you!").Take care of yourself EarlyOut.....

In reply to your original post, welcome to the forum and sorry for the direction the thread headed. At one time you probably would have gotten a more positive greeting earlier. The last few months there have been an influx of posters that seem to want to reopen old threads to post a one line reply that either is a "Thanks, this helped me" response or a repeat of what someone else said.
At one time there was a bit more of the social banter and more posts helping folks with questions when they ran into problems. There have always been the occasional whiner but they generally didn't last long. I had a few that I added to my Ignore List but lately that list has grown quite a bit. Hope you will check back in and maybe things will improve. |

Thanks GvilleRick,
You've reassured me that not all the membership is cynical and unfriendly. I take on board what you say, and appreciate your advice. Have a very Happy Xmas!!! P.S. Apologies to the happy membership for the sarcasm involved with my revised Avatar and signature, I'll probably revert back to the original and humourous one when "satnav" gets off my case!!

I am surprise to see words like Offa, Mercia, Dyke in this place. But any way, you lived more than me in your called "American democracy" (I lived until I was 18 years old in Communism) and you have to be more tolerant or how they are saying "political correct", but you're not. I just see a "big American ego" here.

Um, it's humor. You know, poking fun in a friendly, gentle way. Geez, I even added a winky smile. I guess that wasn't enough.
It has nothing to do with democracy, communism, or America. For god's sake, man, let it go.

I was engaging in a little friendly banter. You have utterly missed the point. Frankly, I don't know what you're talking about at this point.
