My students and I have used several common pieces of web software on my shared hosting account for several years without issue. These include Moodle and WordPress MU. Over the last few months, the software has been repeatedly disabled for excessive resource utilization.
I used WordPress MU with classes of the same size last year without issue. I've used Moodle for at least 2 years with similarly sized classes. Moodle is even included with HostGator's Fantastico installation! Have the resource limitations for shared severs been significantly tightened? Has enforcement been stepped up dramatically? Can 25 simultaneous users of common web software affect a reasonably provisioned server? Is there an option to pay slightly more for the ability to run software that is more resource intensive than a simple HTML site? HostGator's reliability has been excellent up to this point. Unfortunately, the service is of no value to me if software that my classes use gets blocked at seemingly arbitrary intervals during tests and quizzes. |

Could you or your students have installed any particularly resource-intensive Wordpress addins? That could do it...

Nope. We used a stock WP MU install with a single theme available. I'm not particularly concerned about WP MU though. I just had my students sign up for WordPress.com accounts.
It's the blocking of Moodle that bothers me. I've been using Moodle for years with the same configuration and with the same number of students. |
