Default Handling Spam eMail

I see HostGator includes SpamAssassin. once configured does SpamAssassin return spam to the sender with notification that it has been flagged as spam and not delivered to the receipient? or does it just drop it?

It's not a good idea to bounce the email, that just lets the spammer know they have a live address. You can set Spam Assassin to send the email to a Spam box or just delete it.

How does "bouncing" show a spammer that an address is "live"!!

Eleven months ago I had an a average of 35 spam e-mails per day. I used a bouncing program and each month there was less and less spam finally resulting in less than 2 spam e-mails per day!

I stopped using the program for a few weeks and now I'm already back to receiving 15 spam e-mail per day.
