I have had a dedicated server with Hostgator for about 2 years and I've had great support - generally quick, always helpful. The server had one domain that was very busy and occasionally caused problems (overload) so I finally decided to upgrade my server AND move the very busy site (6000 visitors per day, 2 WordPress, 1 PHPBB) to its own VPS. I ordered the VPS, asked for a transfer - great support, zero problems. I then ordered a new upgraded server and asked for a transfer of about 60 sites - some fairly busy, a few with scripts like Joomla and WordPress. Again, no problems. There were a few minor config issues but Hostgator support did NOT say "that's your problem" they just fixed them. I know I can get the same hardware etc at other places but while Hostgator continues their great support, I'll be staying.
The trick with getting good support is to be very clear about what the problem is and exactly what you want support to do. They can't read your mind. Just today I had an issue - it required installation of a module missing from the new server - and it was done really quickly and without any problem. I had previously tried using individual hosting accounts at a competitor but their downtime was poor and support mediocre. I know little about Linux, Apache and PHP yet with Hostgator's help I can focus on HTML and my customer interface and the server works well. If you are thinking of getting a dedicated server, I can also recommend using the services of ConfigServer Services. Their services are a must have and they are also very good.
