Default Google Apps Question

I currently have baby plan hosting which allows you to host unlimited sites.

Now I have my main domain, domainA, and a number of other domains hosted under it, domainB, domainC and so on.

What I would like to know is can I use Google Apps to handle the mail for domainB but have Host Gator still handle the mail for my main domain, domainA?

Thanks in advance.

Take care, Keith

keith-you should be able to, although i'm not the best resource on the mx and a record stuff...i haven't reallyl learned it yet. normally this is done through adding the right records to your domain at the registrars to tell it to handle the mail, however. if i'm not mistaken, googleaps has detailed instructions on what the records need to say, if you dig through their help files.

the fact that domainb is run as an addon should not impact this.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you know if this can be done via my main domains CPanel?

Take care, Keith

This has to be done with WHM. If you're on a shared server, just ticket support with the domain you want to change and the new MX records google gave you and support will make the change.

Actually, you can do enough from cPanel X to get Google Apps mail functioning, as follows:

Go into the cPanel and click on the mail icon. This will take you into the Mail Manager Main Menu.

Click on Modify Mail Exchanger (MX Entry). This will take you to a DNS File MX Entry Maintenance screen.

Click on Change an MX Entry.

In the pull-down menu that appears, select the domain you want. In the field to the right enter ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. Click Change.

Bingo! Mail for your chosen domain will now be sent to the primary Google mail server. (Make sure you've created mail accounts in Google Apps to receive the mail before you change the MX record.)

Just in case the main Google mail server goes offline, submit a support ticket asking the HG techs to create the full set of MX records specified by Google Apps. You also might want to ask them to set up an SPF record as specified by Google Apps.

Doing it yourself doesn't benefit you in this case. They're giving you the multiple ones for a reason. I'd say just open the ticket and have HG put them all in, rather than you doing one and having HG do the rest (leading to possible confusion).
