I'm pondering using Google Aps with one of my domains. Was wondering if anyone was familiar with these and how they work. Would be really nice to meet someone who doesn't mind chatting about this as well as tips and someone to confer with as I do it would probably help a lot.
The one App I was leaning towards is the Gmail Accounts (See below) using my domain. Is this something I'd be able to do while hosting here? Gmail -- the Standard EditionAny thoughts, suggestions, warnings, or any other info you might think useful is welcomed! GK.. |

Lots of people here do it and love it! If you have full forum access you can do a search to get threads where people talk about the transition. Otherwise, request full forum access.

Yup, have done the request, simply waiting now.
And thanks for the info, when I get the access I'll look that up. |

Hey,
A lot of people request for us to set this up daily. Simply send in a support request asking us to change your DNS, along with the DNS records Google wants you to set up. Also, send in the last 4 digits of your credit card along with your ticket- it saves a response, and we can verify your identity quicker so we can make the change for you.

Only problem with that is that I don't host my domains with HostGator. They're all on GoDaddy. And due to certain paranoid like features I want to keep em there for now.

You would need to contact GoDaddy or whoever controls the DNS Zone for the domain you want to use with Google Apps. You can set it up so that everything goes to Google Apps or just the email.
The forums here are geared towards users of HG's hosting services. I'm not sure you will have full access to the forums without a hosting account as HG verifies that an account exists before giving full access. As David and Slapshotw have stated, many users here with hosting accounts on HG servers use GMail as their email for the hosted domain. It only requires changing the MX record to point to the Google Apps server. |

I do have a hosting account with HG.
Just my domains are elsewhere. ((waiting on access based on this post)). I was just thinking that the email App would be better suited. My main Domain is PestilenceDragon.com which the site is hosted here now. Just want to set up an email or two for that site. But thats all great information to have. Thank you. |

The domain registration really doesn't make any difference then for what you want to do. The DNS Zone for your account (unless you have remote DNS) is on your server that the domain is hosted on. You can open a Help Desk ticket as David mentioned and the techs can edit your DNS Zone so that email will be routed to the GMail service. You can also change the MX record in your cPanel for your domain as indicated in the Google Apps docs.

I just moved to HG a few weeks ago and one of my accounts uses GMail. I was a little nervous that something would get scrambled in the transfer process but all went well and was fairly transparent to my customer.

Very easy to do. Google has a FAQ on how to do it for GoDaddy. Just follow the directions.

I'm using the GoogleApps email for two of my largest customers and it works great. One thing I've noticed is that the spam checking tends to err to the false-positive side so you'll definitely want to show your users how to get to the web interface to check on the junk folder periodically.
