Default Good Host But...

... I never thought the 200 email per hour limitation per domain would ever be a problem. Everything else is virtually unlimited (MySQL db amounts and sizes, file sizes, scripting capability, FTP...) on even the Baby Croc shared hosting and after being here a good while, I've barely had any downtime.

However, recently, I really, REALLY needed the ability to send out a large number of emails at once. I had made a website for a college I had attended and wanted to send an email out to all of the students to come visit. Unfortunately, there were way more than 200 students at the college! While my domain rarely sends out more than one or no emails an hour, I really needed the capability to send out a ton of mail just this once, and unfortunately, Hostgator's shared plan will not allow me that opportunity, which is why--and it is the ONLY reason why--I will be switching hosts. I simply can't pay out mucho bucks for a dedicated server.

(Luckily, a friend of mine actually has a tiny web business with two web servers. He already offered to host my site for free, I must merely provide the server.)

As soon as my LAMP server is up and running, I'll have to leave.

So basically, my lesson is that while almost everything may seem unlimited and perfect, the solution you choose will always be lacking down the road.

Sorry to hear you're leaving. You could have accomplished a 200 per hour outbound with PHPList throttling, effectively allowing you to send out around 4800 messages in a 24 hour period.

Keep in mind that sending out thousands of messages is going to cause adverse performance for you, as well as anyone else on the server. It's not fair to our other clients to allow one person to do this, and if we allow it for everyone, then the server will likely be even worse off.

If you need to send out thousands of e-mails an hour a dedicated server is the only way we'll allow it. I'd recommend talking to our Sales department about an unmanaged dedicated solution if the budget is tight. Either way you go, good luck!
