So you don't think rewriting there customer's already custom error pages is wrong? Without notice?

I wish I had more clients like you.

They made it to where you have to do it in your .htaccess file instead of allowing you to do it via cpanel. If the option wasn't available in cpanel I would have done it via .htacces in the first place.

No big deal if it was like that from the start. They switched it and didn't let anyone know.

cPanel should have added ErrorDocument 404 /404.shtml to your .htaccess when you made it via cpanel

Why apologize when they have done nothing wrong, they can be replaced, if you don't like it, get rid if it, this is not technical, and does not take any effort. They are not FORCED ads, they are removable, if you don't like them, take it off...

Why is this thread still going? It has been clearly established that they are removable, not forced, and that HostGator has no reason, or moral responsibility to apologize.

In only 11 posts you've won my Croc nomination for best new member of the year. It's amazing how far the voice of reason will take you.

I'll second YukonMaster's nomination, but he'll probably tie with kuri1j, with 10 posts...over in the Shared support forum he posted a problem, then admitted it was his fault and posted how he'd fixed it.

Two very strong contenders.

All I know is when I get a thousand plus post's on a host's peer support forum please shoot me. You guy's are amature's and have no clue what it's like to manage clients let alone answer to them.

How do you explain to a client that there custom error pages have been overwritten with google ads that there not getting the revenue from?

Don't I pay for this service is what they asked and I can't help but agree with them.

Yes it's water under the bridge now but don't act like it was handled properly.

That was kinda out of the blue, no one needs to act out anything, the only acting is being done by those who think that HG needs to apologize. They handled it fine, wait, what was the problem again? Oh, ya, the error pages, something that takes 30 seconds to configure in your .htaccess

What do you tell your clients? You tell them to add
Code:
ErrorDocument 404 /link to 404 page
to their .htaccess file.

Yes, and ya I know I will get the rant about you knowing how to do that, and yada yada yada, but lets face it, it has been like this for a while now, I think most have just made the change, and forgotten about it, and the few that haven't are here waiting for hell to freeze over.

I'm getting pissed off.

Why in the hell do people keep yapping on 'it only takes this amount of time'.

WHO GIVES A DAMN? It's the principle of the matter of it being done behind people's backs. Does noone have principles anymore?

Why? Because your rant on principles basically calls for these responses, move on, get over it, it has been 5 Months since the issue was called upon, does that not mean something? If HG had any intention to apologize for this do you not think they would have taken the opportunity to do it some time ago? I doubt keeping this going is going to have any affect on their response? So, what have we learned here?

They will not apologize, or explain their intentions, it shouldn't
This thread should be listed in the Websters definition as pointless and any word associated.

When The Eagles broke up the band in the 80's, Don Henely stated the following:
"The only time we will ever get back together, is when hell freezes over!"

In 1994, The Eagles started a reunion tour, what was the tour called?

"Hell's frozen over".

Sorry, just trying to lighten the mood around here

It's not whether he can. It's whether it's right that he should have to! That's the point he's trying to make.

People have the right to feel angry when something was done without telling them.

And, if you're tending their website for them, isn't what lead to visitors seeing 404s--whether HG's, your custom ones, or whatever--your, um, fault, anyway?

Like the time HG didn't tell anyone they were upgrading all the hosting packages at no extra cost.

Can't tell if that is sarcasm or not, but that was a funny story, read that huge thread and almost fell out of my chair laughing. People complain because they are getting something free. And then complain because some got upgraded first, and you didn't, omg, good stuff.

It is like getting a raise, and your boss not telling you about it... would you get mad at your boss? Ah, really saw the humor in that one

That's a good point which I never thought of... but that does depend on if it's a dynamic site, how many pages etc blah blah.

For all of you (us) that would like to do something to help end this thread, just don't post any more replies.

Sure, some one will revive this thread as soon as they experience the 404 issue, but if NO ONE replies, they'll have to drop it and move on to something more productive.

For your own 404 not found page:
Create your 404.shtml document in the www folder (like an html file).
Add or edit the .htaccess file with this line in it, in the same www folder.
ErrorDocument 404 /404.shtml

You can also add lines to this file to handle the other error codes. Cheers.

I just signed up for hosting and started setting up my account.

Instantly noticed this, and thought about just canceling my account, and goin elsewhere because i dont want any of my visitors to be redirected to any site or anything that i dont approve of, etc.

But i'll try this ErrorDocument 404 /404.shtml fix and see how it works.

hostgator should really give the users an option to donate their pages to charity or not, im sure many would choose to if they had a choice.

Question Re: Get rid of the new default 404 pages ... question on technique

Not sure if posting at the end of this long, long thread is going to net results, but am giving it a try.

I am still in my trial period, trying to set up my site before I transfer my domain name, and having tons of problems with things not working on Gator that worked on my other two hosts. Like having to add the ErrorDocument directives to the .htaccess file for the custom error pages instead of just using cPanel.

You are supposed to be able to select an error page name of your choice (per Apache), but I have not been able to make that work. The following does work:

ErrorDocument 403 /403.shtml

But this does not:

ErrorDocument 403 /403-forbidden.shtml

Does Gator not support the alternate filenames? Or is there something else that could be preventing the 2nd example from working (while the 1st example does work)?

I am on a shared account, since that obviously can make a difference (I read most of this discussion as I don't like the HG error pages either).

Any help would be appreciated.

Gecko
