Right...kind of my point. He's actually moving to a dedicated, but he's leaving Hostgator...seems kind of against the point to me. If he's going to a dedicated he wouldn't have the 404 "problem" at HG anyway.

Before anyone else jumps out of a perfectly good airplane, let's try to remember that the custom 404 pages are not forced on anyone that will give 30 minutes or so to make their own. It's something you should do anyway. If you don't care enough to have your own error pages, then don't worry about the ones that are there. The only dead horse here should be this issue.. |

you're in the minority... MANY people think what hostgator did is unethical. i do too, but don't care so much so long as the money goes to a worthwhile charity.

Dwight is right. Regardless of whether you believe it's right or wrong, the issue is a week old and has been debated to death...
Clearly, HG is not going to remove them, but will gladly help you replace them if you ask. A positive outcome from the debate is that the money will be donated to charity... If you believe it's unethical and have a problem with that, change hosts then. If not, change your pages and get on with your business. |

A way to force IE to display you error pages is to add a long comment in the page
HTML Code:

I know I said that was my last post but here's one more.
Just because I signed up for the forum last month doesn't mean I signed up for hosting last month. I do believe you are smart enough to realize not everyone hangs out on there host's forum and some of us have life's outside the internet. My clients sign up here because I tell them to. I have no affiliate link so I'm not profiting from there hosting in any way shape or form. They have control of locking me out or letting me in at any given time. I then manage and develop there site for them at an hourly charge. I choose not to host them my self because my plate is full enough. I don't care what there custom pages say or do. I've used my own custom pages for years. My gripe is that my custom error pages that I have created were changed to hostgator's advertising without me knowing. I lost traffic due to this when I migrated Content management system. It's like nextel changing my voice mail to "The cellular customer you are trying to contact is unavailable. How would you like a coupon to signup with our service or maybe you want some of these other services like a new phone" Same thing IMO. A simple "Attention Hostgator Customer" email stating what I would have to do to keep my custom pages would have been the professional way to handle this. That's all. J.Buesking,
Other than that part Sam mentioned, I do believe your point was well said. I think we all need to keep in mind that what is done, is done. We can not change the past, and that is that. I am sure HostGator has learned from their mistakes, and will use it in the future as they grow, and are approached by situations just as this one. for your time.

That statement was directed towards Dwight. I've been around the block enough and I don't need peer support. That's what this forum is for right? When I have a problem I send support an email or start a support ticket I've payed 434 dollars to HG from my personal account. Multiply that by about 5 and that's how much revenue they have gotten from me and my word of mouth. I know that's nothing to what some of you pay but it's still a drop in the bucket. You dived 434 by 15 and that's how long I have been here. Last edited by J.Buesking; 08-08-2007 at 02:05 PM. |

Well if more users submitted support tickets and/or called about their problems with the custom error pages, it may do some good. While it's nice to air your grievance inside the forums, there is no guarantee the decision maker/s will take notice. Even well written letters to the owner may go further

That's strange... it's not semi-dedicated is it?

I dont think semi-dedicateds get the error pages either

Wow that is a little hard to swallow if it's true. Could you post the server ip or a site address on the server to confirm? It would be easy enough to put your own in place of it either way

I'm pretty certain if you have a dedicated it wouldn't be on. It's definitely not on mine, and they really never touch the dedicateds unless you specifically ask.

I think people are missing the point - it seems that Hostgator hasn't apologised.
People shouldn't have to just forget it and move on. Contrition can work wonders. |

How do you redirect Hostgator's 404 pages to your own? I've made my own 404 pages and Hostgator's 404 pages override them. Can someone give me an example on how to redirect the 404 pages?

You aren't reading the thread properly. My custom pages that I have had for ages were rewritten to the new standard hostgator pages without warning....I understand they are not forced on me and I can change them.
I had them redirecting to links that weren't dead. Instead of getting that traffic it was directed to hostgator and google ads. Is that simple enough for you to understand? Do you not see a problem with that? I don't have a dedicated server's here just a $15/monthly plan that is a development ground. |

I just found out that I also have those ads instead of 404 page. It really pissed me off. It's actually the first time I am disappointed in hostgator for the last 5 years or so.
They should have notified their customers about this change, it's just ridiculous. |

This being your first post, and a HG customer for 5 years, I'd suggest you need to go read this entire forum to see what else you have missed... THIS is where you get notified of changes... usually in advance, albeit sometimes after the fact... but anyone that cares about their hosting business should check this forum at least once a week... or if you can't do that, subscribe to the announcements forum at least..
