All of the threads I've seen about this at HG are years old, and seems it may be about time re-address this. The ability to deny or allow access, or redirect by country is a very powerful tool for any webmaster. Having the right environment installed to make this fairly simple would be a great addition.
I'd really like to see something like an Apache mod_GeoIp (like that found at http://www.maxmind.com/), or the PHP Geo Location extension (http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.geoip.php) installed or made available on shared servers. |

Yes, it is really very important especially with the trends now that we need faster jobs to be done. I guess redirecting is not a good thing to be done anymore in web. It consumes time, especially with the downtime in the internet.

If somebody really wants to get in, geo-banning won't stop them; they'll just use proxies.
Geo-banning only helps for automated/bot attacks. |

Of course, if someone really wants to take the time to crack a site, they will do so, and perhaps succeed. The ability to create an access ban base on location is one way to stem the majority of the attacks, and - for many sites - not ban legitimate visitors.
GeoIp can be used for more than just banning. It's a tool that should be available to every webmaster who wanst to use it. |
