I've recently attempted to address issues with customer's chatting from a far distance from our datacenter (say Australia or Nigeria). The server is now more lenient for "lag", though I still need to make a few changes to make the experience identical for all customers.
If anyone is always experiencing a delay of more than 3 seconds when sending a message, please email me. drew at hostgator |

I'm going to update our HTTP server for GatorChat with a new, and hopefully final in-house server this weekend.
It supports all of the necessary HTTP response headers required for our system to function. It also handles slow connections and improperly formatted requests without slowing down anything. It involved a slight change to our server model. Any of our international customer's where were seeing delays over a half a second should no longer have that issue. |

Did you write your own http server from scratch or did you modify something like lighttpd?

I don't believe there exists an http server using our model. The ability to handle customer http messages is really our bottle-neck, I can not imagine using anything but ours for this. To give you an idea, the 26 chats that are going right now are using .6% CPU and .3% Memory... which is about what it idle's at anyway. This update should improve that considerably. |

Interesting. I'd love to hear the technical details (perhaps in a separate post or even a phone call) one day. Maybe it's with open sourcing?

I might write-up something about it explaining our method, but I doubt we'll ever make the source of GatorChat available.

The system itself is capable of handling multiple companies, and there isn't really that much preventing us from letting people test it. It is more of an issue of prioritizing our projects. I don't think you'll see GChat Beta before you'll be off of modernbill. This is really the type of thing that if it is important to enough people Brent will push for it. I just don't think we see it like that for the next few months at least. |

We are working on a new (final?) version of GatorChat that supports chat over HTTPS, multiple companies, and a bunch of other little modifications to improve the experience.
Assuming everything goes to plan, tomorrow I'll start pushing chats over to the new server. We've got a lot of work to do over here unrelated to GChat, but if you are interested in Beta Testing GChat on your own site shoot me an email to drew @ hg The new server should work on everything that isn't IE (all versions for the most part), and work for IE 6.0 (version 0) and up. I didn't see anyone stating that they used Chrome, so I figured I'd throw that in. |

I've tested pretty much every browser under the sun at this point. Also, I haven't switched it over yet.
