I'm on hold with a tech right now. If they tell me the same thing about an inode limit, I'll find out what it means and how we were supposed to know we were over the limit and therefore not being backed up.

They don't actually promise that they will EVER do ANY backups. See:
5.) Backups and Data Loss Your use of the service is at your sole risk. HostGator is not responsible for files and/or data residing on your account. You agree to take full responsibility for files and data transferred and to maintain all appropriate backup of files and data stored on HostGator servers. |

My site is back up now, but when I enter Cpanel on the main page to the left there is a notice under MySQL Databases that states:
CP-Wrap Critical Error (signal 13 from wrapped program)! This may indicate a corrupt admin binary in /usr/local/cpanel/bin/ / unlimited Is this normal, and going to be fixed? EDIT: Also in Server Status cpanellogd & eximstats say they are failed...I'm just going to assume updates and backups are still being put up...at least I hope thats all it is Last edited by Kat9119; 04-02-2008 at 06:26 PM. |

still having some weird issues, cant do much of anything in the mysql databases area, always get "Error while connecting to MySQL. Failover enacted."
none of the web stats will open, i get "Error: Couldn't open config file "awstats.nulld.com.conf" nor "awstats.conf" after searching in path "/usr/local/cpanel/base,/home/dgriess/tmp/awstats/,/etc/opt/awstats,/etc/awstats,/etc,/usr/local/etc/awstats": No such file or directory " i was told that none of my data was being backed up, although i just opened mysql databases and see that all of my database names are listed in there... cant open phpmyadmin or do anything, but the names are listed in there. quite a day so far, and i have a feeling it will be a long night... |

The reason why AWstats isn't working is because your account was over our 50,000 home directory inode limit. The configuration should be regenerated the next time awstats runs, although we may have to do it manually. I'm still working on trying to salvage data off the other server. Currently it looks like almost everything is unrecoverable. I may have found a super block that is still intact, so I am investigating that right now. |

I get the following when I try to click on the Bulletin Board icon in my control panel so that I can re-install my Yabb forum:
Your admin has not created a cPAddons configuration yet. Please contact them and ask them to do so. |

I lost hours of work... 2 articles on my blog plus a bunch of reader comments. Now they've just disappeared and my WordPress installation has reverted back to an old version.
I feel this situation was poorly handled. Why was I not notified of this server issue when it first occurred? Plus, the Live Chat agent I spoke with today said he "had no idea why this happened". |

The inodes limit has taught us to rely on our own backups only, and since we perform those only once a week (just as HostGator would, anyway), we need to take up to 7 days of data loss for granted should the server crash. That's life. One probably can't reasonably require more in a shared hosting environment for a few bucks a month. |

Tip to those of you who lost data:
If Google indexed the data you published, you can access it via the Google Cache. Go to Google and in the search box, type: cache:http://www.yoursite/the-name-of-the-lost-page I recovered a couple of my articles/updates this way. |

when i asked support about this disk issue the support said that we didnt delete your files and i said "what do you mean.did i delete my files?" and again he said "the files can not be deleted by themselves". what a ****ing answer is this. and finally i learned that there was a problem on the server. it is ok. this is a machine there might be some system crash.
he said again we have the last sunday backup. this was logical. but i got again this mail. Quote:
"You will have to re-upload your content" if i have the backup how can i trust you and reuplaod my files. there are very interesting issues happened between me and the hostgator support . if someone comes to me to get idea about hostgator what kind of answer do you expect from me. and the funny thing is that "if you have a older cpanel backup that i can restore from i can restore that if you upload this". if i had the backup i dont want you to restore my account. i can also do it with myself. you failed hostgator... |

HostGator failed? You mean YOU failed for not making your own backup.

Seems to me that it is more time for a dedi dan a shared wen your sites would have these rates, ornot? And with these rates you would always make daily backups

As much as it hurts for everyone affected right now, Sam is right. I was in fits of rage when this happened to us back in October (only our account was affected back then, not the whole server), but ultimately I can only blame myself for not having made full backups of all our sites. Thanks to Sam and others who helped us in that time of crisis, we've remained HostGator's customers and we've been highly satisfied with HostGator for 2 years now, apart from that one fatal morning back in October. We don't plan to move our sites anywhere else, as it took us many years to find a quality host such as HostGator.

All i know is that my sites are gone.........
Luckily i have a Backup that i'm ftping. Hopefully, it's not corrupted. If not, I lost 14 mandays and 4 projects. If so, i have earlier backups. And from now on i will backup after each project. -steve PS: if i had 10,000 uniques per day hitting my sites i would have been astute enough to know to do backups; since to get to that number i wouldn't be a newbie! No offense, but for crying out loud man i've heard of crashes for the last 4 years and how devastating they are to ones health. It only makes sense to protect yourself against equipment failure!!!! PSS: Support, once i get my DB's ftped i'll submit a ticket. How are MYSQL's handled?????????? |

Everyone's mysql was backed up even accounts that were over the 50k inode limit. On a server of a few hundred accounts it's usually only a few people that go over the 50,000k inode usage. And out of those since were backing up there databases still it's very rare someone doesn't have a backup of static pages, etc.
We have about a million sites hosted and 600+ shared / reseller boxes. It's extremely rare this type of failure happens were the main drives and the backup drives in a raid10 get corrupted, but it can happen. You figure even if it happens two times a year out of the 600+ shared and reseller boxes we have that's hundreds of accounts affected. Everyone that was on this server simply needs to email sales@hostgator.com and we will be happy to give you a one month credit. If you're one of the people who was over the 50k inodes we will give you a three month credit. I know this isn't much but the margins are razor thin with shared hosting on $7-$10 accounts. If someone calls in and takes up even 30 minutes of phone time we lost money on the account for the month. We'll keep doing our best but there is only so much you can do when you have main drives, backup drive, and backups of the raid10 backup. In this case the offsite backups saved the day for most of us. Most web hosting companies advertise offsite backups but when it comes down to it they usually fail to produce in the event of a catastrophic failure such as this.

I need a more experienced person's help on the
following question. I unfortunately have corrupted files and cannot upload the majority of my sites. I have started going thru googles cached pages of my sites and copying the code for whatever files i can find. Any other ideas on where to find cached pages? Thanks, -Steve |
