Due to a recent php upgrade from my previous host which made vBulletin incompatible, I was forced to make a hosting change. Looking at all of my options, I decided HostGator was the best based on its reputation and information on the site. Additionally, I found a coupon which made the first month essentially free, so I figured why not.
I purchased HostGator two weeks ago, and transferred the first site less than a week ago. The past few days, I have been far from impressed. For the past three days, there have been multiple outages due to the database having "too many connections". In some instances, the outage has lasted 30 mins to an hour, and in others, just one minute. Three times I have gone into the live chat. In the first chat, during the first outage I noticed, the operator had an admin seemingly "fix" the issue. I thought all was well. The next day, a friend told me there was a database outage in the morning. I went into the chat to report it, and I was told to wait until there was another one and the problem would be diagnosed. This morning, there was yet another outage, and when I went to the chat, I was told the issue was being fixed. When asked what was causing the issue, he told me it was because the server was new and they hadn't yet "weeded out the bad sites." Furthermore, I asked how long I can expect these outages, and he said "it usually takes 2-3 weeks to stabilize a new server." Additionally, I was told there was someone monitoring the server 24/7, and they are immediately notified when there is an outage. If this is the case, why have these outages lasted for 30 minutes to one hour on some occasions? As I told the guy in live chat, this is not acceptable. I trusted HostGator based on its reputation and what was stated throughout the website. This is something I would expect on a free host; not one which costs 10 dollars a month. So far, I am not impressed by the reputable HostGator. Last edited by Matt125; 10-27-2009 at 11:41 AM. |

So what's the suggestion? That's what this category is for.

I suggest the issue be fixed. I figured this did not fit the category of "review" since I've been with the host only around a week.

Submit a ticket to HG reporting the problem and I'm sure they will do their best to assist you.

That said, the possibility of too many connection was brought up in the live chat, but given the amount of traffic on the forum, I see no way this is possible. It was determined by the live chat person that it was because the server is new and it takes 2-3 weeks to weed out the bad sites. Fortunately there have been no issues since the morning to my knowledge. Hopefully, measures have already been taken to secure the server better. |
