Question Forum question

Does it matter what forum I use for my site, what won't you accept?

I wanted to use MyBB.

Thank you

To be honest I'm trying to keep my overheads down until(or even if)my site works out. If it does end up working out then I would want to invest in Vbulletin or something similar.

Until then I only really want to pay out for HG.

Ever tried PHPBB 3?
It's free and very powerful.
If you want to check out a demo i have one at:
http://demo.revforums1.com

Your fantasico can install one for you with a couple of clicks, but if you decide to use phpbb 3 i would suggest installing yourself.

Would you recommend phpbb 3 over MyBB?

I personally wouldn't. I prefer mybb as I use it on my own website and it is easier to use in some points. If you are looking for a forum software which offers many themes and modifications I would go with phpbb 3 then as Mybb doesn't offer a whole lot in that area.

Personally I would recommend phpBB3 over MyBB any day

phpBB has a very good and well established support base whereas MyBB is severely laking in that area.

Most of MyBB support staff are children, not that I have anything against children, and that shows through in the support they try to give, inaccurate at times, dangerous advice at times and immature a lot of the time.

I once even had one of there head support and developer team tell me they did not know the answer to my problem and to search Google!

And another time I pointed out a mistake made by one of there developers and there answer to that was to edit there post and then ask me what I was on about

This announcement on the MyBB forums say's it all really: CLICK

Especially this bit:

It seems they released MyBB 1.4 with out giving it a thorough security audit first and it is only now after a number of security vulnerabilities have been found that they are having an out side company do a security audit.

I notice they are still offering it for download though even though the security audit has not been completed.

I am sorry but I would not recommend MyBB to my worse enemy to use.

I can't decide if that's good or bad. On the one hand, presumably the security auditors would have yanked the code if it still was as exploitable as early reports made it seem, but on the other hand...

Running this query on Google shows that there are several different security problems (not to mention an unknown number that just aren't being publicized yet):

myBB 1.4 exploit OR vulnerability

Hi Gwyneth,

I just ran those search terms in Google and came across an interesting link to a thread on the VB forums where it was said that MyBB had copied and pasted (read stolen) lots of code from VB in order to make MyBB.

Absolutely 100%!

I could go into all the reasons why but that would still be just my opinion.
If you want a truly unbiased answer check your p.m.
I have sent you the user and pass for the administration area at the demo board.
This will allow you to check out the features from inside and you can make your own decision.

If you are serious about your site, and dont mind paying a small amount for the software vbulletin is better than both. I have used phpBB and vbulletin, and would recommend VB any day.

Though it appears you've already decided, I hope you took a good look at IP Board? (http://www.invisionpower.com) The long-term cost is considerably lower. Just FYI.

I wouldn't recommend MyBB with HG. You have to whitelist every domain that has MyBB installed. It's quite annoying!

I recently registered to the forums because I need a helping guide onto how to set up a forum on Host Gator.

I've uploaded the forum folder using SmartFTP and I think I've also linked it aswell to my "Forum" button.

But it says:

Warning: require_once(/home/xuan/public_html/forum/Settings.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/xuan/public_html/forum/index.php on line 51

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/xuan/public_html/forum/Settings.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/xuan/public_html/forum/index.php on line 51

Looks for help ASAP, thanks.

Normally, a PHP error when setting up a forum will be related to an uploading issue, a permissions problem, a config issue or something of that ilk.

from your error message, it appears the Settings.php file is missing. Try reuploading. I'm not really sure what a PHP error would have to do with "whitelisting" anything.

Dix, the "whitelisting" comment came not from the person with the error but from IMPAQ, who has not posted again in this thread.

In rereading the "whitelist" post again just now, it occurred to me that s/he may have meant whitelist all the domains on his/her own account with it installed--possibly a security provision instituted by phpBB or an addon.

Kudos to regentronique for putting the hidden image in code format, so it can't drop its cookie.

Note to all: tmoncin is using the same domain as 33mikeg--probably worth checking your computer for cookies from it.
