FSCK, File System ChecK, is only as fast as the entire data pipeline between the Disk, and itself. Disk -> Bus -> Ram -> Bus -> CPU -> Bus -> Ram -> Bus -> Disk. With the actual check of each INODE's hash occuring in the midst of that.

The fsck is currently on the third of the initial pass after any duplicate or bad blocks are found, and is a rescan of any directories that have duplicate blocks in inodes. This portion of the fsck has no real progress meter or ETA either. Due to the size of the /home partitions on these servers the fsck's take a fairly long amount of time. We do apologize for the downtime and it will be back online as soon as the partition is corrected.

In this cases, the 404 error can be changed to something more informative?
For example, we have clients that think that their site was hacked...

What about the point 9b in http://www.hostgator.com/tos.shtml ?

it is calculated by year? month? or what? the TOS do not show that info

YAY! This answers my problem. I was scared shitless that somehow all of my sites' files were deleted! I have never been happier for downtime ;0)

As much as we all hate downtime, rest assured this is a necessity, and HG always takes care of us one way or another. I have been with them going on 5 years now....
