Any recommendations on free favicon.ico creation app?
I know I can simply put an empty favicon.ico file in my domains to prevent error log entries, but I figure if I can make the icons simply and for free, then why not. |

If you design a 16x16 image in photoshop, paintshop etc, then go to http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/ it will convert it into a favicon and then you upload it to your public_html dir and your done

I've always just resized a gif or jpg to 75x75 or 125x125 and renamed it "favicon.ico".... use Photoshop or Fireworks...

But if I can just make a 16x16 image, what is dynamicdrive doing for me? |

If favicon.ico is a 16x16, 256-color GIF, JPG, or BMP image, and I can make one of those myself, then what purpose is served by me running that image through dynamicdrive's tool? |

Note sure this is true--I've renamed 16 x 16 GIF files .ICO and they work fine.

Don't forget the line in the header of your file:
Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="<whatever your source directory is>/favicon.ico"/> |

You dont need to put any code into pages.. you just need to put the favicon.ico in your public_html dir and it will work

It's more valid to have the line though.

I just tested and favicons do show up on IE7. Are you sure you're looking at a site that actually has the favicon (shortcut icon) link tag in the head, and aren't just relying on favicon.ico in the root?

Chami also produces, HTML-kit, which is by far the most powerful freeware HTML editor (and I do not say that lightly).

Don't we all know that if something is working in a browser it does NOT mean that it's valid.

Too true, QuietFinn, and I should have been more precise: I have saved .gif files as .ico files with Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, which of course is not the same as 'renaming' them.
(But there's not much translation to be done, because the structure of the .ico file is similar to Windows bitmaps [the .ico file structure consists of two bitmaps--the AND and the XOR.]) |
