Fast page load = postive ranking factor.

A friend has just moved to hosting (not dedicated) where a website accelerator has been added to the server her sites are hosted on as part of the hosting package, she says the improvement in page load time is incredible.

Have Hostgator any plans to do this? I think it would be a good idea, i'd pay a bit more.

It's now almost compulsory that we should work to make our web pages load faster. Firfox Page Speed add on suggests that we should apply Gzip Compression to our pages.

Primarily how do you backup your clients data (if at all), and if you do this manually or use software or PHP + CRON. I am aware HostGator backs everything up on the Sunday of every week, but still recommends for clients to backup their own data.

Looking at all of my options, I decided HostGator was the best based on its reputation and information on the site. Additionally, I found a coupon which made the first month... I purchased HostGator two weeks ago, and transferred the first site less than a week ago. The past few days, I have been far from impressed. For the past three days, there have been multiple outages due to the database having "too many connections". In some instances, the outage has lasted 30 mins to an hour, and in others, just one minute.

Three times I have gone into the live chat. In the first chat, during the first outage I noticed, the operator had an admin seemingly "fix" the issue. I thought all was well. The next day, a friend told me there was a database outage in the morning. I went into the chat to report it, and I was told to wait until there was another one and the problem would be diagnosed. This morning, there was yet another outage, and when I went to the chat, I was told the issue was being fixed. When asked what was causing the issue, he told me it was because the server was new and they hadn't yet "weeded out the bad sites." Furthermore, I asked how long I can expect these outages, and he said "it usually takes 2-3 weeks to stabilize a new server."


Additionally, I was told there was someone monitoring the server 24/7, and they are immediately notified when there is an outage. If this is the case, why have these outages lasted for 30 minutes to one hour on some occasions?

As I told the guy in live chat, this is not acceptable. I trusted HostGator based on its reputation and what was stated throughout the website. This is something I would expect on a free host; not one which costs 10 dollars a month.

In almost every case, there is no need for text on my bookmarks, since I can tell what every single one is by their respective favicons.

However, there is one bookmark I've got up there with a plain old, ugly default icon, and its the HostGator web mail page!

So, my simple suggestion is to put a favicon on that page, even if its the default SquirrelMail icon (since it seems that its a customized version of SquirrelMail).
