Default Bad experience with my shared hosting account!

This has been a while. But I decided to point it out and let you guys know about it.

Well, anyway, I would first apologize that I told my brother to register accounts under my name. But little did I know that he make many "fake" and duplicate accounts under my name. Till this time, I got mad at him, and I'll sign up myself (slimebux.co.uk) was the domian name I think. I guess its either .co.uk or slimebux.org.uk .

I used the coupon "webmag" and got the hosting for 1 month free. My account was created within 10minutes and I got onto it. Uploaded some files and was gonna start my site, UNTIL I was suddenly "disconnected" from the cPanel. I suspected that my account was suspended so I went to my site and had a look.

I went into Live chat and talked to someone and then he told me I have to get my account "verified" by either calling in or emailing documents.

I told him that since the order was free for the first month, why would there be any "fraud" payments. I also did tell him that I have no International Direct Dialing connection to USA. Calls to USA(even if its toll free) come with a connection charge of $0.42SGD/min . He advised me to use Skype when I have no microphone and neither do I have a scanner to scan in documents.

But I want to ask, why would I have to do all these? For a free account?

I'm not trying to demand for my account back, I already found a new host and I just want to clarify things.

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. We do this to prevent fraud (which is unfortunately extremely common in the web hosting industry). Even though the account is free for that month, it can still be misused to host illegal things, spam others, etc., which is why we want to verify the person signing up is legitimate and is not using a stolen identity. If someone does something bad on one account on a shared server, it could bring down the entire server, which is something we obviously want to avoid.

Furthermore, we prefer to assume (and our numbers indicate this is normally true) that the customer will not cancel the following month and will eventually start paying for hosting.

Hopefully this explanation is helpful. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions.
