I'm not sure why I'm getting this error on the simplest part. I uploaded the folder and unzipped the files. When I point my browser to mydomain.com/whmcs/install/install.php, I get a 500 error. If I point my browser to mydomain.com/whmcs/install/, I get the directory listing. Anyone know why that is?

Have you looked in the Error Log in your cPanel to see what errors are being reported? You should check permissions on the folders and files. Folders should be 755 and files should be 644.
