Question emails per hour

Hi there,

I read a couple of posts around here from users complaining about having their accounts suspended because of the amount of emails their scripts sent during a 1 hour lapse.

I am currently hosting a social-network script somewhere else, with decent traffic, that sends an email to a user whenever he or she recieves a private message. This causes (depending on the month and what time it is) a LOT of emails to go out, and very possibly over 200 emails / hour at some times.

Would it still be ok to host a script like this in HG ? (swamp plan)
and if so, what should I do to prevent getting suspended each time this happens?

Modify the script to limit the emails getting sent

thanks for the quick reply

Well, yeah, that could be a solution.
I guess what I meant was: Do you suspend every single account that passes the 200 email/hour limit, or is there a way to avoid this by letting you know that i'm not spamming or whatever?

Anyway, I guess I could always change the script :/

They seem to have cracked down on this recently.

Just make sure that it never sends out over 200 an hour and it will be ok.

Try and make it not send worthless emails (eg. a comment has been posted etc.)

Also, the dedicated servers don't have these limits.

i thought it just dumped the email, and didn't suspend the sender. but it's been awhile since i've been on shared...

if you can limit the emails going out per hour with your script, that really is the best solution regardless, though, because it will serve you well both in a shared and later on, if you end up getting a dedicated.

If you have a good social network like myspace,hi5..etc your members are going to leave you because they don't get emails alerts when a comment is posted on their profiles, this is the main featured that keeps a social network site a live.
Is like having a very active forum 200 , others member will complaint that they don't get the PMs

just my 2 cents.

Regards
Eric

I have to agree on that. My pages are running on a dedicated server, so I don't have this problem - but it's getting too expensive all together, so I'm trying to find a new host. Maybe HG

200 mails per hour is nothing. Are you sure it's not per minute?

As more people already stated (if this really is the limit) you could go about it by making your own queue system. This will however slow mails down during busy hour - but it will keep your page online!

Another workaround would be buying a small smtp only service elsewhere that is possible to implement in your code (not using port 25).

I don't know any such service off the top of my head, but if funds are limited you could go buy a small shared host elsewhere with more relaxed smtp rules and simply forward the messages via http(s) requests.

It seems cumbersome, and more solutions are probably available, and I will try to think up more

My 2 cents.

- Nicolai

Honestly if you are hosting a social networking site that runs that kind of traffic, a dedicated server would be your best option to avoid problems with CPU usage as well.

As a limit for a shared account, the most expensive of which is $15 a month, it actually seems generous to me.

A hotel room for $15 a night is just not going to be as nice as one that costs $75 (i.e., the monthly cost of least expensive dedi), let alone one that costs $175 (the next dedi up.)

Obviously, the standards by which they're judged are very different. Getting clean sheets, functional door lock and tiny shower stall would make a $15 room an incredible value, while paying $75 for the same setup might be either extortion or the deal of the century, depending on where and when.

Sharing a server is a lot like sharing an apartment--if there's only one bathroom, you really wouldn't expect exclusive access to it for hours at a time.

And to add to this we have raised the limit of emails per hours from 200 to 500.
